    Re: The minimal wave...

But has the minimal sound progressed since the early 90's? Genres themselves evolve over the years. Think about how techno, trance, and progressive has changed.

As for Digweed, what sound is he pushing now? Is it a prog, techno, or combo of sounds? I would vote a combo of those sounds which I prefer. I think it's important to mix good music from different genres.

It absolutely has progressed...away from the chicago influenced detroit sound of the early 90s to a more truly minimal electronic sound

          Re: The minimal wave...

Jenks, I completely understand how long the genre has been around for, I was talking more about the wave rather than the genre itself.

Also, that was me who made the comments in the other thread re: the P&R forum. My point still stands, I'd rather download a set from the P&R section than the amateur section. I've got as much chance of hearing something "off the beaten path" from a professional in the P&R section than an amateur's mix.

Having said that, I totally agree with you. 99% of everything I've downloaded from within there has been total garbage. I'm about to cull probably 5 gigs from the last 6 months or so of stuff I can simply do without since I'll never play it again.

For me, I get my satisfaction out of frisky and proton radio these days. Big props to these guys, there's some great shows on from people who are quite unknown to me, and who seem to have a very good understanding of music. It's usually on full time when I'm at home these days.

Driving to work this morning I thought about this thread and how it's probably come off as me bitching about the music, much like people before me bitched about electro in their sets 18 months ago. Again, I don't have a problem with the style of music (in fact I love it), but don't see much originality or direction in the sets in P&R. In fact they're all using the same collection of songs.

And phil, thanks for those suggestions. I'll be checking them out as soon as I get home. I don't recall coming across any of their sets so if you could suggest any that would be great.

                Re: The minimal wave...

I'd like to think I can find a piece of gold in the P&R section by someone who I can come back and download time and time again. I rate my chances higher in that than in one of the amateur mixes, even though the strike rate for my way of doing things is close to 0, I've always got frisky and proton to fall back on, which seems to have a very high strike rate for me.

                  Re: The minimal wave...

hmmm for my taste, bodzin's massive october mix, barem, kriece, habersham, savoretti, audiofly, pig & dan, extrawelt, lars fischer, gaiser, g-pal's most recent set among others are far from garbage. I'm not so harsh on the P&R forums...I think there is some good stuff to be found in there.

                  .....particularly the stuff I post

                    Re: The minimal wave...

I don't think much at all of Bodzin as a DJ, I saw that pig & dan set and I'll grab it when I get home, missed the Habersham one but would be keen to hear it, and the g-pal one I'd be keen to hear, I got the one from a few weeks ago but didn't like it too much.

Thanks for all the uploading in there btw, just because I don't like all the stuff there's 1,000 others to take my place. Keep up the good work!

                        Re: The minimal wave...

Minimal is ok but for the opening half hour of a set...it just gets boring after a while. Its something I'd listen to by myself but not in a club.

Since the whole electro/minimal/tech house thing took over, to be honest I've been waiting on it to fizzle out. Dont get me wrong I like some of new stuff but not in the way I like old progressive.

I missed the best prog years (I was only 13 at the peek of it and into total rubbish in terms of music) so I'm kinda playing catch up (by listening to older stuff) instead of going along with the new wave.

Minimal has definitely had its run, at as it being something fresh.
Personally the kind of stuff Martin Garcia is playing, a sort of techish trippy prog
feels like the next new thing. Just mindblowing twisted energy driven tracks.

Every genre goes through cycles, and I'm sure minimal will be no different. To me, good minimal/tech/deep techno will probably always be where my heart is at...I don't perceive the good stuff as a choice between minimal feel and melody.

^^^ Miroslav, this is a curious question I figured you'd be worth asking since this seems to be your genre of choice.

Do you think someone like Bodzin is in the top echelon of DJs (not production) for the sound he plays? Who do you rank at the top of that game?
