Don't feel bad, I had a nightmare with it too. Worst piece of shit I've ever seen. Didn't have to reinstall, just did a repair. None of my keyboard hot keys worked and no matter what I could not turn that damn firewall off.
I had some bugs before SP2, installed it, and it solved some, but not others.
So I did a clean install on my Hard Drive Partition, and then installed SP2 as the first thing thereafter.
Now it works like a charm
So I now slipstreamed SP2 and made a new bootable XP disc with it all set to go...any "re-installs" will be of XP w/SP2 integrated already.
I think a lot of times it just comes down to installing and uninstalling so many programs et al, that eventually versions of exe & dll files get all out of wack as is between the files & the registry....installing a SP on top of that further compunds the problems, or makes hidden problems come to light.
Believe me, I've had some wack problems with Windows before...
