what do you think about DJs that show up, put on a already-mixed CD/mp3 and pretend to mix all night long, when all along he's been putting on a show? i think of it as a scam.
here's an email i recently got from a friend in SF:
hey fellas and fellette,
just got back from this place called "xxxxxxxx lounge". it was a friend's birthday party and she wanted to grab drinks there; the place is just like Halo, except the dj was playing some radio hip hop.
I was listening to him thinking, "wow, he's got some really smooth mixes" so I kinda meandered over and looked at the setup: 2 decks and a mixer. then, I noticed it: he had a laptop. When he went on break, i took a look, and man, my faith in the dj world has been shaken.
winamp.
playing a single track: "friday night mix"
i watched him the rest of the night. he had the same 2 records on the whole time, pretending to mix and beatmatch, moving the pitch control, queuing the records, etc. but the whole time his laptop was playing "friday night mix". he had the earphones on and everything, gyrating to the beats, playing with the treble and bass controls, moving the crossfader back and forth ...
i was half-tempted to write on a napkin, "you are a fucking poser" and hand it to him as I left, but I was kinda drunk (and still am, I just got home) so I didn't.
come on. winamp? pretending to play records?
