Re: track selection in your mix sets

Some people tag their rec's with keys ......it's nice way to build up your set if you know how to place your keys harmonically but it takes hrs to sort them....i just pick 10 rec's that imo sound good together and try and mix them..most cases i have to record it 2 times not more to get it right otherwise i use different tracks to match .....when i t comes to live then you have to know alll your records off by heart in n out i wouldn't risk playin live w.out knowing my tracks...

if you've got a good ear, you can always tell when something doesn't sound right. But considering that when you are spinning, you are pretty much only mixing the first 30 and last 30 seconds of a song, then the keys don't really matter all that much because all you're really mixing is drums.

Re: track selection in your mix sets

        some good tips in here.

I just recently got a dj settup back up and running after about 4 years of no dj'ing on a regular basis and its nice to be able to record again. I don't really have a set proceedure for making track selections, i just go with my instinct about what tracks sounds good together and what tracks can build the mix up to a certain mood. Its hard to rationalize this process, as i just use my senses.

Just record everytime...As for mixing "in key"...It's like Jeffrey said, you know when something doesn't sound right..You either hear it or you don't...If the track doesn't sound right, don't mix it...

sometimes a good key change, so long as it isnt god awful, is a good attention getter

as for mixing the 1st and last 30 seconds.. uhh, what?

I'm typically in the mix for a good minute or more, somtimes in the middle of a track, thru a break down, etc..

but i agree with the other comments, mixing in key can get really monotonous and predictable, throw a curve in there, and when you know your music (which in this day and age of mp3's and WAY TOO MUCH music at our fingertips makes that a bit more difficult) it will come a lot easier

Most dj's that are out there these days mix within the first minute and the last minute. where there is mostly drums on the track.

I too mix not the same way all the time. It depends on how I am feeling at the time. I'm not trying to pick on you steve, leaping you in with all the other dj's out there...I am making a generalization.

^^Amen to that! Fuck all this mixed in key computer music tool nonsense...Like I said earlier or maybe in another post, you either have it or you don't (An ear for music that is)...If you don't have it and have to use tools like mixed in key to "help" you dj, maybe you are in it for the wrong reasons(Trying too hard, for some cause/personal gratification)....I'm no Digweed or whatever, but I love music, and feel like I have some sense of what works together...Never in my mind would I use a "mixed in key" type software..I don't think anyone who loves music or is in it for the love of music, would "cheat" like that...Or would they?? Anyway, that program is a cheat.
