id rather have some help from technology and take advantage of it than denying the present.

yeah, i embrace technology, but i still believe that mixing a set with abelton is cheating. it requires no skill and makes a mockery of real deejays who actually mix their tracks by ear, instead of an auto-mix function!

just my 0.02 on soft and that "mixed in key" application:

I believe it's OK to use software applications such as traktor or ableton to do your thing (although no real beatmatching with ableton) but "mixed in key" is the worst cheat you can use when DJing. it completely takes the human input out of the equation ... I mean, before, careful track selection was what would make a DJ stand out and now you just need to load that app to you comp, let it do its thing and voila - you've got all it takes to build a perfect set, despite the fact you can be as deaf as a bat. I'd rather spend years constantly trying to improve my "ear" than use "mixed in key" ...
It comes from inside, just listen ...

^^ ableton, traktorr, mixed in key and every software "kills" the spirit you are talking about in the same way. Anyway this discussion ends nowhere so better if ended here.

pretty much the same here.. just go thru me cd case and start playing, you will come up with some of the best mixes/transitions that way.. that you would never have thought of before

^^I just keep going through tracks in the headphones while I listen through the monitors, and I don't stop going through tracks until I find something that remotely sounds like it will go with the previous track...I never know what I will play next...Most of the time, I don't even know the name of the tracks that I'm going to play...I just listen....

Can someone explain how mixed in key works? I mean, does the software know chord progression or how does it all work? I mean, obviously it can tell which tracks are in what key and tell you how to arrange them by musical scale, but I don't think I understand how it could play "in key" without a "surprise" as to which key the next track will be in...Know what I mean? I mean, it can always help you mix "in key" but can it skip a key and play the next tune that would be in that scale? I don't know how else to explain this.........

                        HUH?!

mixed in key is just softwar that tells you what key a track is in.. it doesnt actually mix them for you.. so you would go thru your tracks and label them as to what key they are in.. but it is still up to you to understand how to put the tracks together in a certain key.. this is what i mean by if you jsut have an ear for music which most dj's should, you can tell if a track goes with another track or not.. and even still, like i said before some of the best transitions are between tracks that you would never think went together.. going from tech to deep to progressive.. dj-ing is and always has been and always will be about imagination..

you are a conductor, the decks are your ochestra.. make music! simple as.. well not really, but look at it this way.. you think laurent garnier uses mixed in key programmes when spanning every freaking genre of edm out there.. no, when you watch him play, the music is moving him and basically telling him where to go, and thats the beauty of all of this

as i said, thats just my interpretation, never used it, never seen it.. if it does actually tell you what to play next.. jesus, why even bother with a human standing there, lol

Yeah, I was wondering...What kind of mathematical algorythm was used to determine the key selection of the next track chosen..Meaning, how would it know what "sounds good together"....But, yeah, I've never seen it either. It would be pretty cheezy if it chose the next track for you... :/

Re: track selection in your mix sets

after reading up a bit, it just tells you what key a track is in (of course adjusting the pitch will change the key unless you use master tempo)
Mixed In Key (also known as MIK) is Windows and Macintosh software that simplifies a DJ technique called harmonic mixing. The latest version of Mixed In Key analyzes MP3 and WAV files and determines the musical key of every file. Knowing the key, DJs can use music theory (such as the Circle of Fifths) to play songs in a harmonically-pleasing order. The software helps to eliminate dissonant tones while mixing songs together using a technique such as beatmatching.
