SANTA ROSA, CA (AP) -- When a few classmates razzed Rebeka Rice about her Mormon upbringing with questions such as, "Do you have 10 moms?" she shot back: "That's so gay."

Those three words landed the high school freshman in the principal's office and resulted in a lawsuit that raises this question: When do playground insults used every day all over America cross the line into hate speech that must be stamped out?

After Rice got a warning and a notation in her file, her parents sued, claiming officials at Santa Rosa's Maria Carillo High violated their daughter's First Amendment rights when they disciplined her for uttering a phrase "which enjoys widespread currency in youth culture," according to court documents.

When police went into Nitschmann Middle School Tuesday to arrest Principal John Acerra for allegedly selling crystal methamphetamine, sources said they found him naked while sitting at his desk watching gay pornography.

A 28-year educator with the Bethlehem Area School District and principal since 2000, Acerra is in Lehigh County Prison under $200,000 bail.

As for the first story, I find it interesting that the Morman girl gets disciplined, but the others making fun of her Morman upbringing are not...so Gay is a protected class, but Morman religion is not

First of all that ban on the N word is non-binding (don't get me started on the absolute waste of time this concept of non-binding resolutions is becoming...rather than actually doing anything, they just make f^*kin suggestions...don't actually take a stand...pathetic! ).

Second this is yet another show of how useless gov't is becoming. You don't censor through law, you educate people to understand why using the word in most contexts is racist. We constantly try to use the law to regulate matters which are truthfully the realm of education. If you have more aware and respectful citizens, there's no use for such laws.

And I'm not even touching on how unconstitutional such a law would be...

Why must you call it republican? I've always been a firm believer in personal responsibility. While it may more often be verbalized by the republicans (of old, as Mike correctly points out), rather than democrats, it certainly is more of a libertarian concept. And a key component of this philosophy is education which apparently no one is really trying to improve (with the exception of our city's mayor).
