Sometimes as many as five tracks come together at once to create completely new tunes - through Sasha's innate ability to clarify at streamline sound means things never get over-crowded. Instead 'Fundacion' captures a great DJ having the time of his life. "It's completely re-energized me again," says Sasha. "I'm jumping up and down in the DJ booth. And people can feel that on the dance-floor, they know."

Look I'm not saying Sasha is God - or even the best at what he does, all I'm saying is that he is top 10% for sure.

There is only one reason that Sasha uses that Maven setup: it's because he recognizes that DJing straight out of a laptop tends to look like shit to a live audience. It's a marketing thing. He's not stupid... He knows the crowd will react better to seeing him working knobs and sliding faders, not spending all his time squinting and some damn computer screen and pointing and clicking the whole night away. But there's nothing that that Maven thing does that Ableton DOESN'T. And there are plenty of people doing Ableton sets now, Sasha is hardly alone in that.

And while I think Sasha is ok and has done some cool stuff in the past, I'm not about to go cream myself just because he can press a button and have pre-set elements from 5 tracks play at once, no beatmatching required. I've been around this game to recognize that that in and of itself does not make you a great DJ.

Re: CD's vs Vinyl and Why!

I am about to buy my DJ setup and I decided to buy cdj's first. My friend has two Technics 1200 with a vestax mixer, so we both buy vinyl. Vinyl is the true format of music but can be a bit expensive. For a purchase of 10 vinyls, I can buy the double and then some on mp3. I like cdj's because there easier to learn on, provide effects and mp3 tracks are now more accessible to dj's and their cheaper. The only disadvantage of mp3 is that white label and hard-to-get tracks are mostly available on vinyl. I love the feel of mixing vinyl, its truly addicting. But for financial reasons, I prefer cdj's.

Man, if I hear you mention something about beat matching one more time you're going to get 5 across the face!

And all Maven is, is a glorified midi controller. But trust me on this, having a midi controller makes life a hell of a lot easier when you can use an actual knob and fader instead of use a mouse. Plus he can manipulate multiple parameters at once, not just one at a time.

With that being said, I'd rather listen to Diggers any day of the week than Sasha.

But now you should ask yourself, what does it mean to be a DJ to you? I hear you keep saying beat matching this and that and slagging on people who have transcended the traditional two decks and a mixer set up.

This whole purists attitude has got to stop as it's hindering the scene and not pushing it forward.

And don't forget, the Nazis were also purists.

Please don't compare DJ's to the Nazis. Purist DJ's are nothing like the Nazi's. The Nazi's Killed people that were different. Dj's just grin and bear it.

This post you were referring to was much older than the other one I know you read. In that newer post I already conceded that Ableton can let you do cool things and clarified that my disagreements pertain to how it is sometimes used. Not gonna get into another long discussion on this or start talking shit about slapping people. The end.
