Trouble With My Internet. Help Me...please with sugar on top

Okay heres the deal. I use a PCI wireless g card for my desktop. My one roomate uses a wireless card for his laptop. My other roomate uses a cable cord for his desktop. The problem is my Internet only works randomly. Sometimes fine, then at other times like crap. My connection is always on and connected at a pretty good rate but usualy changes from 36mbs to 56mbs. My roomate with the laptop has the same problem. My roomate with the cable works fine and is always connected and plays the online game Vanguard 24/7. We use a Linksys-54G router. I was wondering if anyone knew what the problem is. I really would like to be able to download when I want and play Americas Army, Soul Seek and other programs online whenever I want. I know I can go in 192.168.1.1 as the admin and mess with my settings, I just don't know what to mess with.

Do you have other devices nearby or around the house...usually things like cordless phones, video senders and the like can mess around with transmissions when they run on the same frequency. Distance is also key, especially if you're going through a lot of walls.

As for settings, there are several you can tweak or look at: Check to see if you're running in mixed mode (b/g) or g itself...change the channel to see if you can get better reception (many are set to default at '6', but if you're in a residential area, chances are others who may have wireless are using the same thing, or again any other devices you think that could interfere...)

Sometimes it may just take some tweaking and testing of the settings to get what works right in your particular area...your roommate won't ever really have the problem because he's hard-wired in.

sounds like u need to buy bigger ariels for the back of ur router, most ariels that come with router as standard are fuckin pap m8, for around 10-20 quid u can get decent ariels that will dramatically improve ur wireless connectivity around the house

What exactly are ariels, my connection says I'm always connected at a pretty good rate. Could my roomate with the cable be sucking up a lot of the connection?

yea ur bandwidth is shared between 3 people so u would expect lower rates if all three people are using the net @ the same time especially if u have the 3 people downloading @ the same time, plus wireless 802.11 g isnt exactly the fastest wireless connection u can get

ditto that -- it's the router. Go on Linksys' web site and go to their forums -- there are scads of people with the same problem. There are some settings that people have referenced on there, though, that might help...

Couldn't find a forums section...Is there anyway I can only allow a certain number of people to be able to access the router?
