Re: Viacom sues Google for $1billion
its about time IMO... you just can't take stuff from people and put it on your site.. This is a big deal because if google looses then everyone will attack them looking for their piece of the pie.. Microsoft must be loving this. -

Re: Viacom sues Google for $1billion
The law suiits that youtube and google video must attract would be a minefield. God knows how they manage to stay afloat.
It will be interesting to see what comes of this. As the others have said, you can't just redistribute other people's content like that and consider it legal!"If not for Josh Wink, Sasha wouldn't own any Acid except for the paper stuff he dopes chicks with at clubs." - Jenks, 2004Comment

Re: Viacom sues Google for $1billion
from the link i posted:
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is pretty clear on this: The operator of an Internet service is not responsible for the content its users post, save for taking it offline when it receives a "takedown" notice from a copyright holder.Comment

Re: Viacom sues Google for $1billion
they knew this was going to happen as everyone has said long before they bought youtube. they are going to be protected under the rule above as google itself didnt do any of the actual infringing of viacoms copyright. since youtube has a policy that says they will delete any copyrighted content when notified of it they are safe. it doesnt matter if it takes them months to actually get to it or not........which is why youtube is still decent. if it was just full of dumbasses talking about their boring lives into internet cams all day no one would care or give a shit about that site. the copyrighted content is the only reason youtube is worth going to.Comment

Re: Viacom sues Google for $1billion
Google makes money of the advertisements placed around the video that is playing which isn't even theirs. That ain't a fair way of doing business for anyone but Google. As much as I love the company, they're broadcasting copyrighted media to the world without paying rights, yet I'm the bad guy if I download some copyrighted media for a single person viewing.
day_for_night: that's an interesting line, but what about all the torrent sites which run purely off user submitted input? Those guys get shut down pretty fast and that line you quoted seems to fit nicely for them. I think it's a case of if you provide the facilities for users to post the copyrighted stuff, you kinda null that law (as someone mentioned in the comments to the link you posted)."If not for Josh Wink, Sasha wouldn't own any Acid except for the paper stuff he dopes chicks with at clubs." - Jenks, 2004Comment
