I wonder if its just puffing by Viacom to get better revenue splits from the ad dollars when YouTube rebroadcsts.
One of the reasons this is such a big deal is that the network affiliates (who buy shows from TV stations) can actually sue Viacom for infringing exclusivity rights for content. New TV deals are attempting to get around this contractully or by making new episodes to broadcast on the internet that do not fall under the affiliate contract.
Fox has the right idea by realizing that the more people that catch up with episodes (via YouTube, dvd of last season, or timeshifting via Tivo) the better the show will do in ratings in the long run...
