    Learning Chinese

Got a wild hair, am contemplating trying to learn to speak Chinese. Can anyone recommend any good resources/programs/etc.?

        Check out http://www.berlitz.us/

Erzina is learning Dutch with another system which is pretty good: Assimil. Basicly it's focussed on learning to speak a language rather than learning all the gramar for writing. You can order your English-Chinese course here: http://www.idiomas.be/producten/assi...e-with-ease-1/ and http://www.idiomas.be/producten/assi...e-with-ease-2/

i would look at continuing ed classes in colleges around you. my mom is learning korean at a korean church - maybe you can find something like that in the community.
i have a few friends that study chinese up here, they all say its pretty fucking hard, then they go abroad and decide not to come back.

Of any language on the planet right now, Chinese is probably the most beneficial, especially being an attorney.

Russian? lol. wtf do the russians have that's worth learning their language?

Knowing Toasty, i'd imagine he's just picking up the language just because, "why not?"

                      Re: Learning Chinese

ni hao bai guai, (hello white devils) i took mandarin for four years in highschool and having parents that know how to speak it helps. i think you should take classes at your local jounior college and see if you stick with it for a year or 2. But if you study for at least 3 or 4 years or spend some time in china or spend time with some slopes you can pick it up. 2 words you will learn to hate...stroke order.

Yes. Stroke order sucks ass. Write a paragraph in Chinese and your hand will hurt like you wrote a book in English.

Hit the nail on the head. I think it will be a good challenge. I've heard it's harder than hell, so if I can pick up Mandarin Chinese, normal, everyday challenges ought to be gravy...

The way the world is become more and more of a global economy, I do think that 20 years from now, I might look back and thank myself for learning it now, but I am really just interested in it for shits and grins.
