where's the progress. Id hate to say it, but too many Dj's are conforming to formula's; the music structure is just too damn obvious. I should probably have some proof ( i guess).
you start off with a basic beat, generally with either high hats n' snares (no bassline) or the exact opposite. The idea here is to give dj's the ground work to mix easier, less clutter on the mids allows for smoother transition. sometimes you have a melody and no beat....also helps to mix...and then comes the boom as i like to call it.
What is the boom????
the boom, back in da day - when i was but a wee lad, was some cheesy drum role as a prelude to the previous melody +beat, or a quick silence before +beat. As the basic formation soon gave way melodic synth roles, the structure remained the same but the sequencing became more advanced.
techno, and the drum role became trance and the melodic rythems...long silences and reverb n' echo laced vocals.
then some people (who swore they never liked techo or trance) vowed that house music is the universal language etc. etc. and so house music was reborn...frankie knuckles or deepdish, these crackheads called a spade a spade.
it was a constant beat...no roles or gimiks but instead the genre used adding and subtracting from the beat to create its highs lows and climax. Because of its western roots, the genre featured some jazzy - funk vibes...
Soon east and west met conveniently in the middle, an island many feel is not apart of europe. The british (who viewed the rest of the world as wakaz or whatever) were still tripping balls over happy hardcore, drum and base and hip hop. break beats btw are basically hip hop beats sped up; ask mix master mic, qbert and da like, that little alteration in the beat before variation form ( a form of musical departure) but enough music thoery. Somewhere between the beer and the pills and a few nerdy looking guys trying to get laid; break beats hit center stage....genius i tell u...some of the worlds best producers are british.
zgermans (everone else in europe minus france, italy and spain are zgermans). must have been pissed. kraftwerk must have been rolling in their graves (they must be dead by now right?). Trance was almost dead (too obvious...ok so you can play three notes on ur midicontroller...congrats). So they thought (and most of the world at this point were thinking) why not mix up all the elements huh? get some rock ryffs going, with trancy filter sweeps, sometimes we add beats, sometimes we chop op vocals with effects,,, sometimes we bust out the breaks, drum roles, silence's, funky vocals, melodic vocals, tribal, goa, psy... doooo ittttt.... and here we are. as expected.
thats the point ladys and gents (mostly gents). predictable. its not the producers fault, or really the dj's. Its not music for the sake of music. its something people wanna here when they go out. something repetative so they can keep a consistant dance that hopefully they have mastered by now wilst wasted. No one buys Electonic music Cds, they may go to the clubs, but they dont buy that shit. If they do, they buy some Dj's CD (not the producer) and a famous dj @ that. Records are for the serious listner...but how many are there...what %
we know...i mean we must know by now 90% of people stepping into a club w8ing for a famous dj dont give a rats ass what he plays as long as the majority thinks its cool.
the real music fans, us.. The guys that put the sets and music into the sweaty palms of the guys that at one point thought venga boys were cool, prevent that sorry son of a bitch from learning what he or she really likes, what music is.
Long live creativity and those who yeild its majestic sword
(i donno what that means, its gay but iv been watching the series rome n... i should shut up now)
