my belated Digweed @ Mezzanine, San Francisco review

This was the most amazing night! More amazing than seeing JD on new years in LA? no. More amazing than seeing Digweed abroad at Brighton Beach club or at his Bedrock night at Heaven? yeah, about that amazing. Coming from Virginia i have been on a 4 month road trip across the country. I have been hiking/camping and seeing everything this great country has to offer and its been amazing. At the start of my trip i was able to see Sasha @ Aria in Montreal....amazing night, one of the best i've ever seen that man, but then as my path on my trip crossed San Fran right at the same time Diggers did, i knew that my trip had come full circle and complete with this night.

Diggers put on an amazing show. Desyn (sp?) pumped us up big time, i dont know what his set was like at the Mayan but i read reviews prior to going to this night and didnt care if i missed him or not, but after that night i was so glad i caught about an hour. He had the place jumping. Then digweed came on ever so quietly and patiently and just blew me away. I ventured up , front and center and was the most energetic and frantic i've ever been at a club. Digweed did throw breaks in, but only for a minute and then would go back to his deep, chugging house beats w/ so much bass and so much EVILLLL melody on top of it, the man is so amazing. I got to the point of utter dehydration and the man would keep building up the breakdowns and then the cold blasts came out from the sides like a dragon's nostrils spraying cool mist on us. Since the closing of Twilo i have not seen this cool blast thing in any club until now. Such a refresher. The best part about the ones at Mezzanine is that once they are sprayed you cannot see the person to the right, left, back or front of you for at least 1-2 minutes, making the club go into a frenzy because all you can hear is music and see nothing. And John loved it, he kept building it up and playing the most wicked evil beats. The crowd thinned out around 3 and we were able to spread out and really enjoy the rest of the set. THe vibe was SO SO great in that place, i didnt see one sketchy thing going on and everyone was there to enjoy. The great thing was, i think Diggers loved the city/crowd and wanted to play well past 5am. They shut off the video screen, he put another track on, then the lights got brighter, another track, then even brighter, and JD puts on.....a chill record. "What is that sound....ringing in my ear." i dont know my artists/track titles but i'm sure you all do. But in all my years of knowing this guy and reading reviews, etc., i dont think i've EVER- heard of him putting on a chill record at a club...i've seen other DJs do it, but never him. Incredible night, nothing but the best. I left on such a cloud that nothing could bring me down for days. The best part of it all - is that i have been away from my personal computer for 4 months on this trip, and havent had access to new music and havent been d/l every new Kiss mix, etc. EVERY song i heard that night was fresh and new. I never want to go to a club again and go - oh..this track, more than once. It was like back in time when i used to have that feeling. So fresh and so enjoyable. I encourage you to do the same.

that is all. i'm using a friends computer in Bakersfield, CA so i wanted to post just how great a night it was. i tried finding other reviews on here w/ the search engine but came up w/ nothing. So if you all know of a link to one on here or on www.globalunderground.co.uk, let me know, i'd really love to read what others thought of that night, it was truly special i think.

    nice review mike.
sounds like you creamed your shorts, as i would have. :P
i think digweed brings those mist sprayers to most of his gigs. Nerve in miami was using those for the bedrock party this year @ wmc. and when diggers drops the evil, he drops it nastier than any other can.
glad to hear he's not losing his edge.

The club is Mezzanine, the fog machines were kryogenic (sp) foggers. That weekend was the the peak of a heatwave that hit the bayarea, so it was about 80 degrees at night, no joke. I wasn't there, but heard it was fukin sick. I actually went last night to catch Hernan's set which was pretty wicked.

yea, john and desyn were spot on that nite.

i love the vibe of san francisco. always have. just such good people getting into thier grooves.

i know john played a bit more experimental in sf, then he did in la.
and we ate it up. hehehee.

the last two hours were just seriously relentless. perfect in so many ways.
and when he first got on it was an on slaught of electro vortex.

        pillow humping rules.

damn, nice review. sounds like you had a great ending to a great trip.

i know what you're saying about not knowing the tunes. i took a break from prog and followed house/tech house strictly for quite a while and definitely enjoyed going back to hear a prog dj without knowing every other track. fun stuff, different perspective.
unfortunately, i'm back to following every release, mix, chart, etc.
