I agree. Granted, I think Jesse and Al gleefully and unfairly blew this incident way out of proportion. And God knows there are enough other examples out there of hypocrisy, etc. But in general, this is not the first time Imus has said stuff like this and rubbed people the wrong way.

Just because Don has a legal right for Congress not to restrict his freedom of speech, it doesn't mean that he gets to sit in front of his microphone and spew garbage and be immune from any retaliation by society - who are, after all his listeners, sponsors, and employers. If you're on radio or TV and you make your living by taking cheap shots at people and calling them thieving Jews, lesbos, chinks, nappy headed hos, and whatever else he habitually said, then don't be surprised when you're eventually shunned.

I don't think that he should've been fired over this as a racial incident, but from a basic decency standpoint...can't say I'm really very sorry that he'll be gone.

I don't really care if Imus got fired or not. The part that I am concerned about is how this is such a pathetic case of selective outrage. Guys like Sharpton and Jackson are grandstanding this issue because a white guy said something about black girls But they won't lift a finger to get at the more serious issue of rap culture which is becoming mainstream and is glorifying the sort of behavior which Imus was mocking.
Al Sharpton, in a interview yesterday, claims that he has in the past and plans to go after rappers too. He agrees that rappers misogynistic lyrics are wrong and needs to change. Personally, I don't believe he's really trying to change rappers and certainly hasn't been successful.

I think he's a using race to make money. He's probably done some good bringing up racial injustice when it happens and it does. However, I think he's in it more for the money.

Talk is cheap. I want to see him take action against the rap industry which spews the crap that Imus was immitating.

Imus did nothing wrong except to try and use modern, popular slang. Fucking 6th graders would have used the exact same words, or probably worse. Where is the outrage over THAT?

There is no outrage because 6th graders don't have their own nationally syndicated radio and TV shows.

                    Re: Should Imus resign?

Ahh good old American stupidity and people working their hardest to skate by and fuck up someone else who is making more money than them win out in the end and Imus is fired, pretty goddamn retarded if you ask me. Well at least they were kind enough to wait until the end of the radiothon today huh? What were they aiming for when I tuned in for a bit 2 million dollars raised for charity today?
Nice to see that shit gone...now time will have to be wasted reorganizing around this bs instead of focusing on next years fundraising efforts.
I would like to thank Fox, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and Reuters and whoever else for picking up on 30 seconds of radio commentary and making it into something that actually was important and screwing someone over even though it was not "pc".
It was nice that Oreilly last night kept asking Sharpton if he was going to go after Ludacris (his favourite gangsta target btw), et al as much as he has gone after Imus and he kept backpedaling and really wouldnt give an answer. Things that make you go hummmm.....

On one hand as was said before in this thread it is good in America where we have reached a point where African Americans who were once derided now can have outspoken freedom of speech as this, but on the other hand when tiny comments get blown out of porpotion into "he stole our moment from us" (bitch you didnt even know who he was before you caught Inside Edition talking about this story!) type nonsense that causes people to lose their jobs I have to shake my head.

This country loves to blame others for their problems instead of each of us not being fucking lazy and being responsible for our own actions.

I'm off to file my suit against McDonalds for making me fat.

                        Re: Should Imus resign?

anyone see CNN this morning? Jason Whitlock took Sharpton to task for some of the things he's criticized of in this thread, including exploiting the Duke players. Very interesting...

Whitlock? You think? He's had the most rational take on this from anyone I've heard from any vocal member of the African-American community, imo...

no, that was in reference to Sharpton.

i can tell you, as a NY'er, after talking to a lot of people, both black and white, this event has polarized race relations in NY a lot. to the point where whites arent saying anything, but i have heard more than a few say they wont deal with blacks at all in the future, and the vice versa as well. opinions were changed big time because sharpton and jackson, and im just as guilty, as i will be constantly thinking about this every time i see a black perosn.
