Yep, so me is back from Mavrovo, Macedonia. Spent a hell of a time boozing and hiking, but nothing came from the mountainbiking/kayaking/paragliding plans.
Mavrovo lake is partly artificial: a dam was built for hydropower, making some parts of the surrounding flood. But this winter there was hardly any snow, so that had some consequences:
- The rivers were as good as dry since there was no melting water coming down from the mountains. Result: kayaking was out of the question...
- The level of the lake was way down since the dam kept consuming water and the lake was hardly fed. Result: even the "Flooded Church" was on dry ground.
- Since there was no snow (and it's still ski season overthere), the ski lifts had been shut down. Result: no paragliding.
- Since Macedonians are in general too retarded to anticipate on weather conditions, there wasn't a single mountainbike for rent either ("Sorry sir, the Summer season starts on the first of July." "Dude, do you see any snow out there? It's 21?C for crying out loud." "Sorry sir, it's still ski season." "Why don't you turn on the ski lifts then so that I can go paragliding?" "Sorry sir, there's no snow so the lifts are shut down." "Do you know a guy named Franz Kafka?" "No sir, why?" "Nevermind"

Ah well, w'e still got to hike around the lake and all of the above was forgotten pretty fast when I saw the prizes of the bottles of Merlot at the hotel restaurant. Good times!
