The Future of Our Vinyl Collections

I imagine most MS'ers like myself have an extensive collections of records
that take up quite a bit of space. Now with a new generation of music junkies
raised on MP3's and computer technology. Where the hell will all the records
end up. Have not looked but imagine the demand for records on places like Ebay
outside of rare or sought after tracks is not too high, especially in price.
Will the crates of vinyl lay in garage store for grandchildren to marvel, playing them
on 50 year old technics, which will of course still work great.
Personally, I can't part with my records.
How about the rest of ya?

i've considered converting them all to wave files, but that is a LOOONG process, and i don't know if i have the patience. don't really want to sell them, still love busting out the techs every so often, though i've been playing 100% cd for quite awhile now.

Ok well i have alot of records.. and yes some are shit and it was when i was a vinyl junkie thats when i did not think of quality over quantity.. so i have no room anymore for all those records. i do still like most of them though but in ten years tastes change and all. anyway what i plan to do is go through them all and just bin the ones i think "what was i thinking" or "what a waste of money"..

Thats the only thing you can do.. keep the ones that still have it and just bin the rest. currently i am on the mp3 thang and still would love to pull out some lost classic's.. so just trim your record collection.. Just my 2 cents

I still play 100% vinyl in all my sets. I have begun to slowly rip all of them for backup but plan on keep playing vinyl. I have been playing vinyl for over 10 years and just dont get the same feeling DJ'ing with CDJ's or Serato as when those beautiful black plates are spinning beneath my fingers.

I will never part with my vinyl. Love the look, feel and smell of them!

Although Im using cdj's for 90% of the time, I still occassionally purchase vinyls that are not available on mp3.

I have way too many classics that I wouldnt sell on ebay, even though it might get me a lot of $$$$$$$. Just too rare and too much of Quality out of print trance classics and whites to let go.

I started converting them into mp3's but I would seriously need to take time off work just for that.

I have about 5000 records, but usng Ableton exclusively now. I converted a bunch of vinyl to WAV when I first started using Ableton, but once I had a decent amount of music on hand.... I just buy digital now.

I will not sell my collection, however. I actually consider my records like a fine piece of antique furniture. They actually are a nice touch to a room, when stored in well designed bookcases. In every house I move to, I have custom bookcases built for the records and I leave them out on display.

They are also a tangible testament to the years of enjoyment I've had. In most cases, I can pull a record off the shelf and have some distant memory brought back which I associate with that song.

fuck that...

now way in hell I am voluntarily parting with mine. I've put a damn good bit of time into growing it and I've loved every minute of it. I'll probably branch out into CDs some day soon, but not at the expense of my records. I'm not opposed to creatively used innovation, but vinyl will always be the classic DJ standard for me...I don't care what the new kids whose DJing experience has never extended beyond their hard drives say...

on topic: i have quite a load of vinyl which like u said does take a lot of space but even though some are high in prices on places like hardtofindrecords.com etc etc i cant bare the thought of parting with them as it reminds me of a good part of my life, the way i look @ vinyl is that its a material part of a memory
