Oprah's giveaway garners buzz for GM
Just ask "Anna Karenina" about Oprah. The daytime talk show host, whose recommendation put the 19th century novel on the best-sellers list, has generated a rush of interest in General Motors Corp.'s new Pontiac G6 mid-sized car, GM officials said on Tuesday.
Visits to GM's web site Pontiac.com soared more than eight-fold to 242,000 on Monday when Oprah Winfrey gave the Pontiac car to each of the 276 members of her audience.
The $7 million giveaway, courtesy of GM kicks off a $50 million marketing and advertising campaign for the new car over the next four months, said Jim Bunnell, general manager of the Pontiac-GMC brands.
"It's incredible her impact," Bunnell said. "She breaks through (advertising) clutter like no one else."
Winfrey's surprise gift quickly became the talk of the late night television shows, and generated headlines around the world, creating an enormous buzz for the new car, Bunnell said.
The award-winning talk show host opened "The Oprah Winfrey Show" by calling 11 members to the stage and surprising them with a new G6. Winfrey then handed out gift boxes to the rest of the audience, saying one of them contained keys to a 12th free car.
At the count of three, the boxes were opened all at once, revealing to shrieks of delight that everyone had won a set of keys. As audience members screamed, she rattled off many features of the G6, including OnStar safety service, XM Satellite Radio and a powerful engine. (HUH?)
"How cool is that?" she said.
Interest in the G6 comes as GM's U.S. sales have slowed in recent months (NO SHIT), despite its high incentives. GM officials have said the incentives are losing their ability to lure buyers, and the automaker earlier this month cut its planned production of new vehicles for the fourth quarter in North America.
Winfrey's credibility with her millions of viewers will help establish the G6 in the marketplace against its competitors -- the Mazda 6, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima, Bunnell said.
The G6 will also be featured on Winfrey's web site Oprah.com for the next 90 days, and Pontiac is working with her production company on further collaboration, said Mark-Hans Richer, Pontiac's director of marketing.
Winfrey's production team is discussing shows about how the lives of some of the winners have changed with their new cars, he said.
