    las vegas bomb

Backpack bomb at Luxor parking garage.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- A backpack exploded in a parking garage attached to a Las Vegas hotel early Monday, killing a man who had picked it up and injuring another person, authorities said.
The man had removed the backpack from atop his car when it exploded shortly after 4 a.m. on the second floor of a parking behind the Luxor hotel-casino, said Officer Bill Cassell, a police spokesman.
The second person was taken to an area hospital.
Aerial video showed no apparent damage to the parking structure, where entrances were blocked while police, firefighters and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents investigated. No further information was immediately available.
The Luxor is a pyramid-shaped hotel at the south end of the wide road known as the Las Vegas Strip, which houses many of the city's hotels and casinos.

        more details:

Las Vegas police evacuated the Luxor Hotel & Casino' sportsbook this afternoon after a "mysterious" package was found, just hours after a bomb exploded in the casino's parking lot, killing a man.
However, Las Vegas television station KLAS 8 says the package turned out to be an abandoned bag -- and the evacuation was precautionary only.
Meanwhile, authorities say they have ruled out the possibility of the parking lot explosion being a terrorist incident. They say is appears the victim, who was not immediately identified, was the intended target. Police spokesman Bill Cassell told the Review-Journal that another hotel employee narrowly escaped injury when the device exploded. The man killed in the blast worked inside the casino but was not an employee of the casino. A device left atop a car in the parking garage exploded, killing the man who picked it up, authorities said.
The Associated Press earlier reported that the victim was pronounced dead at a hospital after the explosion, which occurred a little after 4 a.m. behind the casino.
Investigators were reviewing hotel surveillance videotapes for clues.
Cassell denied initial reports that a backpack exploded and dismissed suggestions that the slaying had ties to organized crime.
The man who was killed ''worked inside the Luxor, but we do not think he was on the hotel payroll," Cassell said. He characterized the slaying as ''a homicide with an unusual weapon."
Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM Mirage Inc., which owns the Luxor, said the person killed was not a company employee.
''Police do not believe the resort was targeted in any way," Absher said, adding that the Luxor was not damaged and that except for the top floor of the two-story parking garage, the resort was continuing normal operations.
Immediately after the explosion, entrances were sealed and authorities went vehicle to vehicle with bomb-sniffing dogs.
Later, people were being allowed to remove their vehicles after they were inspected by authorities, Absher said.
The explosion occurred in the parking garage behind the Luxor, a pyramid-shaped hotel at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip that has more than 4,400 rooms and 4,200 employees.
Cassell declined to describe the device.
''This was not a terrorist event," Cassell said, characterizing the explosion as small and saying that no threat was made against the Luxor or against the employees.
There was little damage around the vehicle and the hotel was not evacuated, police and a hotel official said.
Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents were involved in the investigation, said ATF Special Agent Nina Delgadillo, regional spokeswoman for the agency in San Francisco.
