Firefox 1.0PR: a first look

This free browser has more features than the most recent version of Internet Explorer. Check out our first impressions.

Mozilla.org, an open-source effort created by some of the original pre-AOL Netscape designers, has been working on Firefox, its Internet Explorer alternative, for several years now. The group has now released the much-anticipated preview of Firefox 1.0.


The so-called Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Prerelease (PR) is very stable -- unlike most betas -- and offers many advanced features that should put Microsoft on notice. But don't take our word for it, try it here and stay tuned for our review of the final browser, which we expect soon. Note: as with all beta products, Firefox 1.0 Prerelease is not intended to replace your full-time browser software, so please install with caution.

This free program has more features than the most recent version of Internet Explorer. For example, Firefox 1.0 PR includes Live Bookmarks -- a feature that allows you to receive RSS feeds within your browser -- and a built-in Google search toolbar. Firefox also lets you view more than one Web page within a single open browser and has the most customisation options of any browser available. Like Internet Explorer, Firefox also includes a built-in pop-up blocker.

Microsoft maintains its monopolistic hold on the Internet browser market: 95 percent of the audience uses Internet Explorer. Cracking into that will be hard. Not every Web site is optimised for non-Internet Explorer browsers, so some, such as banking sites, may require you to use Microsoft's browser rather than Mozilla. And although more media plug-ins are now available for Firefox, you might want to check here first to make sure the ones you use are listed.

The outlook for Firefox is very good. Recent security vulnerabilities within Internet Explorer have caused minor erosion of Microsoft's browser market dominance. Of all the credible alternatives, Firefox has the most positive buzz and offers the most advanced features.

I currently use firefox at home for all my web exploring and it is hands down the best explorer out there. I was amazed at how much faster web pages loaded and the built in pop-up blocker that it has is exceptional.

I d/l and installed FireFox about two months ago and have been extremely happy. Whereas it has its own faults, they pale in comparison to those I faced with IE.

For instance (and some of these may be things I don't quite understand about the browser) even though I have selected a default download location, FF continues to put all d/l into my Temp folder. This only happens on d/l I cannot right-click and save-as.

Also, with video displayed inside a webpage, if I try to view a second time, adjust volume control within the embedded media player, etc the entire display of the video clip goes 'white' but I can still hear the sound.

Even though I click the box that says to open a particular file type (WMV, MP3, etc) with a particular program automatically, I am prompted each and every time as to what program I want to use.

But as I said, I've been extremely happy overall.

that sound like a huge pain in the ass to me considering how many mp3 samples i listen to in the average weeks record shopping....

I've noticed that too! It's my only pet peeve with Firefox. IE and Firefox each get about 50% of my browsing time on the Internet, since neither one really pisses me off more than the other.

i don't quite understand... firefox 1.0 pre-release? then what version have people been using for ages?

I like Firefox...however there are some very annoying glitches here and there... like problems opening a new window (pop up) when you click on a link, it seems like its getting "stuck" many times and you have to keep clicking over and over... very annoying!

I remembered another pet peeve, and saw that it was fixed in the new version:

weird bugs like this sometimes happen if new versions are not installed cleanly (i.e. if an old version was just installed over rather than uninstalled before the new version).

try uninstalling your copy, deleting the appropriate folders (such as the one under your documents containing your profile, as well as the one under program files) and then reinstalling. export your bookmarks before doing so if you want to import them back in quickly. as well, under options-download you can specify what firefox does when it encounters different filetypes. i have no problems playing wmv files from within firefox.

My video goes black, but I know what you mean. There are still quite a few incompatibilities with Firefox but its getting better all the time. Gamespot.com used to get totally jacked but it seems to have been fixed.

All in all I use Firefox because its not a Microsoft app. I try to use anything and everything (foobar2000 for music, AIM instead of Windows Messenger) that is non-Microsoft if I can help it. The fact that it kicks major ass and has unlimited potential also helps.

I usually don't use the nightly builds of Firefox (the milestone releases always seem to work better) so I'll probably wait for 1.0 instead of getting the beta. Either way, I'm glad its finally here.
