Re: Bush to Tighten Sactions on Sudan
You know what's really sad? When I saw this this morning, my initial reaction was, "Well, Bush can probably sense that whether he likes it or not, the Iraq war will be coming to an end soon, so this will allow him to justify warmongering somewhere new." That thought was actually BEFORE, "Good, we're finally recognizing this as a real problem."
truth is, though, if there's a place on this planet that would justify the US and everyone else going in guns a-blazing on humanitarian grounds, it's probably Darfur...Comment

Re: Bush to Tighten Sactions on Sudan
Can't blame you for thinking that toaster, but China is against these actions already. They've got oil interests in Sudan, so they want to keep the government close and only want to help through economic support.
Bush said that sanctions will be brought up in the UN as well. China has veto right. 1+1= no way Bush is going to start another war without consent in the UN. I mean, the guy's a retard who's lost touch with reality, but he can't be that stupid, can he?Comment

Re: Bush to Tighten Sanctions on Sudan
I wonder what's gotten into Bush this week. He announces the Sudan sanctions and wants to discuss greenhouse gas emissions. I'm not complaining, but why now? Regardless, it's nice to see he's taking issue with problems that we've been wanting him to address.

Re: Bush to Tighten Sanctions on Sudan
I find it no coincidence that he's taking to these issues now. Most politicians tend to do the same towards the end of their terms and I suspect that just as much will actually get done as when he didn't care about them. Sudan sanctions will quickly get vetoed by China and there's not much more we'd be willing (or able) to do on that issue. As for greenhouse emissions, I'd bet any proposal put forward will find some strong opposition on either side, whether it's not economical and unfair as compared to China or not strong enough. These late term issues tend to get buried in election BS. Just watch, you'll see.

Agree on the point that these are all probably political calculations (think Hillary Clinton). At least Bush is taking on the issues, but I'll wait to dole out credit until we see some actual results.Comment

Re: Bush to Tighten Sanctions on Sudan
The UN will get behind Bush as long as he has someone draw up a pretty graph which illustrates that these sanctions will stimulate economic development elsewhere in the region or that it will stop some violation of human rights (even if it leads to countless others off the record). Let's not forget that most of the 2nd and 3rd world's UN representatives are in Uncle Sam's pocket, since he strategically saddled them with billions in debt through IMF loans (see Perkins, Confessions of an Economic Hitman) and can call upon them at any time to support a resolution or build a shiny new military base in their homeland.
The UN has at least some interest in the blood diamond trade, as it implemented the Kimberly certification process (though it is routinely circumvented by listing the last nation a diamond travelled through as its place of origin). It was a coalition of British and UN forces that finally succeeded in dismantling the RUF in Sierra Leone. Whether much has changed since then, I honestly couldn't say, and who knows if they'd have ever done anything if it wasn't revealed that Al Qaeda had reaped millions from the resale of those diamonds.
Just a couple thoughts that came up over the course of the thread, hopefully I'll have something informed to say about the Sudan sanctions in the near future. The Cosmos works by harmony of tensions...Comment

Re: Bush to Tighten Sanctions on Sudan
The situation in Darfur comes down to one single issue.
Oil.
Sudan has it, and China wants it. China and the Sudanese government are in bed together. China threatens to veto any measures in the UN which would end the violence in Darfur, or impose sanctions.... because the sactions would affect their oil supply. China is growing so quickly, but they are being held back by 1 single problem. They can't get enough oil to sustain their growth. They can't afford to lose any of their oil suppliers. So if the UN were to impose sactions on the Sudan, it would ultimately hurt China economically.
So.... China has been blocking all the efforts at the UN.Comment
