    The history of electronic music

Here's an interesting article about the history of synthesisers in music. Made me want to pull out my Blade Runner soundtrack....

Some had beards. Many were German. But they all had synthesisers. Simon Reynolds tracks the history of electronica's Seventies pioneers whose influence stretches to infinity and beyond.

You've really got to appreciate the passion of these pioneers, lugging all that fragile equipment around when on tour and having to take extra equipment as back-up.

Big difference to todays electronic wizards who can carry all the software and hardware they need on a laptop and create about as many sounds and effects as they want to.

Imagine what it will be like in 10 years. DJ's will be playing entire sets off of their iPhones!

Interesting. I;m from the US, and the EDS history tends to be regional in nature. On the east coast, where I grew up, EDS history tends to be a mix between 70's NYC disco, 1980's breakdance music (especially Africa Bambaata), and synth rock (i..e. Flock of Seagals). I was completely obvlious to the whole Detroit Techno sound in the 80's.

well how old are you. As I'm 31 and remember breakdancing, since i was doing it back in 83. But I don't remember house, techno or TD until the late 90's when I was introduced to TD, and wasn't introduced to EDM until 2000. I grew up listening to metal and rock.

Did they make any point about Brian Eno. As that guy deserves his own few pages in the history.

If you're gonna go back as far as Stockhausen then you might as well go back to 1902!!

yeah Stockhausen, Cage, Tudor. But let us not forget the two frenchmen that brought us Musique Concrete...Pierre Schaffer and Pierre Henry. Both of those guys were doing back in the 30's and 40's what all the sound installation artists are doing now.

that guy did that thing with thw 4 hellicopters pulling up and down the loudspeakers, and he mixed the sound of the engines with some orchest-electro sounds. I have that record, it?s pretty long and boring, but interesting the first minutes.

conceptual art...the final piece is never as interesting as the actual concept. That's the downside of conceptual art.

herbert deutsche-- the guy behind moog synths. mr. moog was simply a engineer. herbert was the music. and he is cool. lives here on long island, teaches history of electronica at hofstra uni, and if you email him,, he will happily talk to you. he will tell you electronic music was around in the 20's , when people weer ecomposing DAT tape edits of real world sounds. he goes back that far.
