    Raff n Freddy>MRE>Resistance D>Dominica>Medway>Sander Kleinenberg

Drove to work the other morning, sun was shining, I could tell it was going to be a great day, whacked in GU Ibiza Disc 1 and I was literally nearly crying at the delight of those first 6 tracks; what a sequence that is on any mix CD ever!!

That GU ibiza is timeless ! I've also been playing the 3 x Northern Exposure CD's lately.

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

Its the quickest 30 minutes on any disc as well, because it's so good, the tunes just keep coming and coming, ideal if you face a crap drive home from work!

Used to be a time when producing a mix compilation (and on GU at that) was a serious artistic endeavour. Tracks chosen not just for being anthems but because they gelled well with one another. Mixes between one track and the next where the combination of the 2 becomes a track in itself. This feeling of adventure, of the music taking you somewhere has well and truly gone of late. Recently the only releases that have done a bit of this for me are the last 2 Balances (10 and 11). Personally I reckon the GU efforts fell on their face after Darren Emerson. The reason we all love the Norhern Exposure releases and stuff like GU Sydney, San Francisco and Ibiza is because they are not just a compilation, they're a work of art in themselves and will continue to sound timeless forever.

the tunes in the subject of this mix are probably the best :45 mins of prog house ever perfectly mixed together imo. i dont think it is humanly possible to provide a better buildup to sanders my lexicon than all the tunes before it in the subject of this thread. not to bag on sander or my lexicon (as it is probably one of my top 3 fav prog tunes ever), but you have to give sasha 100% credit for putting sander on the map with his amazing buildup to my lexicon to introduce sander to the world.
but then again my lexicon is a timeless fuckin amazin tune which will never get old, so it does stand on its own never the less...

You know a tune is a classic when it gets remixed by Cass and Slide and then 6 years later by Stef and the 16 bit Lolitas.

Sander Kleinenberg's GU Nubreed is heavily under-rated and up there with the best - it's about as cool and eclectic as EDM can get. Every time I out it on its like hearing it for the 1st time.

Well put mate .. I could not have said it better.. Especially the bit where u said "This feeling of adventure, of the music taking you somewhere has well and truly gone of late". I have noticed this too with a few comps where the tracks are alright and all but well they just paly track after track and dont actually blend them in. Its like the cds used to move forward within themselves and not stagnent.. I mean Digweeds transitions disks and all his other stuff still do it for me. But nowdays i feel like there is no blending involved and i guess u have to have the perfect tracks to do that i i sometimes feel like the journey is not there like it used to be. Dont get me wrong i am digging the sound of now and all but is just the gelling together thats missing. Just my opinion though.

I'll be really heretic and say that even Digger's transitions haven't been up to his usual quality. Out of Sasha and digweed I reckon Digweed has the greater technical mastery in creating a musical well-gelled together mix between tracks.
My opinion is that he has NOT been doing this as well, in his commercial mix releases ever since the Stark Raving Mad comp. (which by the way, would've been a lot better than what it is if it wasn't for the bloody movie quotes sprinkled throughout it)

In other words : Fabric 20, Layered Sounds 2 and the Transition efforts
