This is a natural byproduct of our post-vinyl age. It's exactly what you'd expect to see happen.

Before, you had to convince the right people you had talent before they would undertake the investment to get your stuff out on the market. Now every loser with a hacked copy of Ableton can do most everything on their own and there is no real investment or risk anymore. The result is that we've never had such a wide assortment of shitty electronic music out on the market.

The profusion and ease of production software brings a lot of good things with it...but unfortunately as the stakes of production go down, so do the standards. From now on, we'll all have to get used to digging twice as deep to find half the number of good tunes we did before.

You can't stop progress Ironic, don't you think?

I guess all the "new equipment" to make music has driven producers off another path in music production. And with producers popping up left and right, I guess we get a saturated market in tracks that it's difficult at times to find the good ones hidden amongst the thousands of new tracks on the interweb!
lately ive been listening to Kiss sets from '00 to '03 and loving it ... for example right now Oct '00 Three kiss set ... before that the '03 March Kiss set what would u say is difference between those sounds and what we have now ?? and where can I find more of this stuff now ... ?? might not be the best question but I

yeah it's getting harder to find good tunes! You get your good days and your bad ones.. the bad ones usually make me a bit drousy while surfing the internet.. I mean I actually get sleepy wtf..

I remember seeing a couple of digital site contracts in the past through friends pushing their (good) labels and getting into the digital realm...there isn't too much involved per say (aside from the usual contract mumbo jumbo) and it really just boils down to we'll put your label/track(s) on the site for sale, and the amount sold gets split a certain way...so really almost anyone who wants to put their music up on these sites can if they have some marketing and contractual know-how; if it doesn't sell much, then they don't see much...which also shows that it probably wasn't that good to begin with. There's some extra pushings and editorialness involved with features & new releases, exclusivities, etc.

The numbers have gone lower to get in, but the results are still there...you make a shitty track, it isn't going to sell much if at all, and you're not going to make anything out of it in the end...

It's not just a matter of risk. If you have no talent to begin with anyway it doesn't matter how much you stake financially you'll still release crap.

One of the most basic problems with most of the bilge sediment being produced is that it's put together and released very quicly without any thought on basic compositional technique. A lot of people are just tacking disparate musical and rhythmical ideas together without worrying about simple musicianship tenets like development, codas, recapitulations, bridging passages etc. Every musical masterpiece that has ever been put forth has some sort of skeletal structure, from the frenzied threnodies of a Nine-Inch-Nails to the fugal superstructures of a J.S. Bach. Most of the rubbish out there are just 1 idea squirts which have no lasting quality.

            END OF RANT

true, but if you stake your own money and release crap, chances are that you will take a sizable financial hit and not do that again. It's a self correcting mechanism.

But besides that, it wasn't really the crappy producer undertaking the risk...it was the record label you as the producer had to convince to invest in getting your stuff marketed, pressed, and distributed. When scare resources with opportunity cost are involved, people tend to be more careful about making sure the people they're dealing with are bringing their A game.

its up to the lables now more than ever to step up controls of quality, and for sites like beatport to stop carrying lables that don't at least put some effort into doing so...

To be honest, when a label submits a release for Beatport, they have to specify the genre for each track of the release, so if you can't find the good "progressive house" in the prog house section, blame it on the labels submitting for trying to be something cool and submitting a release under another genre, rather than actually classifying the music as what it really is.

Tons of "minimal" is straight up prog house. jokers.

Same goes with "techno" ....loads of trance in there.

And btw, it's not supposed to be easy to find the sick tuneage. Same as it's always been, dig dig dig.

most of the stuff i've bought off beatport are old releases i couldn't get on vinyl until labels put their back catalog up digitally.

                          F the top 10.

                            Agree on all points there.

I actually find that what many of us would consider quality progressive house is under the Tech House genre at Beatport and yes, sometimes under Techno.

I'm actually sick of hearing Electrohouse. I found myself exploring the progressive house section again more so than ever before.

Btw, I've seen those guidos quite a few times since moving to South Florida. Funny stuff.
