At first when I opened this thread I was going to reply and say that there are no set rules for love, and anyone who tells you there is doesn't know what they're talking about.

Growing up I was always told by mates 'dude you gotta wait 3 days after the date to call her so you don't look too desperate and keep her keen' or other such nonsense rules for dealing with the opposite sex.

I've never believed in any of that. If I like a girl I'll call her when I want to, tell her how I feel, and not follow any silly rule book. The same I feel applies to telling girls I love them. I'll do it when I know I love them and when I feel like I want to share it with them.

But after reading the comments in here from fisheye I've been forced to rethink this a little. The phrase gets used in a lot of instances for insecurity and self assurance issues. Sometimes it's not been said to share with someone how we feel, but to guage a reaction from them and reassure yourself that you're been loved.

Having said all this, I still have no problems with telling the girl I love as much as I see fit.

Interesting that this topic should come up know...

I?m having a relationship with this girl from work, it all happened extremely fast (like...I started talking to her about 3 weeks ago)...

I?ve left my girlfriend in the meantime (not just because of this relationship, also for a bunch of other reasons) but this girl has a boyfriend who I feel she doesn?t love anymore (she won?t say for sure), and she feels he doesn?t love her either.

Anyway, she hasn?t been able to finish off that relationship yet, she says she?s very confused, but in the meantime me and her are living this really intense relationship, where we?ll meet as often as we can, keep sending text messages to each other whenever we?re not together...I mean the 1st time we kissed I?d swear there was an earthquake, and by now, I?m pretty sure this is the woman I?ve waited for my whole life...and I know she feels strongly about me...but it?s like she?s waiting for ?something? to happen...waiting for me to say or do something.

I want to tell her "I love you" so much, but I?m afraid of it, because I?m afraid I?ll get hurt...it?s something really BIG for me to say...and I?m afraid she won?t say "I love you too".

But I wonder if she?d find the courage to break up with the other guy if I told her how much I love her.

Mate, I feel for ya. I've been in a similar boat with a girl I used to work with. It turned sour for me in the end, and I ended up putting myself through living hell for about 5 months while I still had to work with her. Alongside her in silence for those 5 months. In the end I was forced in to finding a new job, which was the ultimate blessing in disguise. It forced me to stop living the good life in a mickey mouse job and get my proper career underway. So glad it was the thing to get me on my proper track in the end.

Although you could put yourself through hell, you can't stop a guy in love. Go for it and I wish you more luck than I had

I like that expression..."put yourself through hell"...believe me, she?s worth that. She?s worth getting burned for.

To DQ...as a man, I?ll admit that there have been times when I told a girl "I love you" but not being sure I felt it...mainly i did it because, like someone else said here, the girl was looking for reassurance...so I felt it was what she wanted to hear...or other times I said it without being sure, because i wanted to keep that person around.

Awful, I know, but I?m sure I?m not the only person to have ever done that.

I've been with my girl for 6 1/2 years and we dont say it that much. I do love her and she knows it. Every now and then I say it as does she.

I've never been that typical guy in the typical relationship where couples call each other "babe", "hun/honey" etc. I cant stand that shit. I call my gf by her name.

I hate it when my buddy calls ME babe! That right there shows it's just routine and nothing more. Same can happen with "I love you " but maybe not as much. That has more "depth" and I guess it couldnt hurt saying it more often.

I've learned the following techniques worked well for me...


1. when she asks how she looks shrug and say "could be better" this will keep her on her toes. and girls love that.

2. never hold her hand. this can be interpreted as a sign of weakness. (or if she grabs your hand squeeze hers really really hard until she cries. this will impress her by showing her what a strong man you are.)

3. once a month sneak up on her from behind and knock her over. girls are like dogs. they love to be roughed up.

4. call her in the middle of the night to ask if she's sleeping. if she is say you better be , repeat this 4 or 5 times until morning. this will show her you care.

5. when she is upset about something, suggest to her that it might be her fault. this will pave the way for her own personal improvement. and every girl needs some improvement.

6. recognize the small things . . . they usually mean the most. then when she's sleeping, steal all her small things and break them. because jewelry is for pussies and asian ladies.

7. if youre talking to another girl, make sure shes looking. When she is, stare into her eyes mouth the words @#%$ you and grab the other girls ass. Girls love competition.

8. tell her you're taking her out to dinner. drive for miles so she thinks it's going to be really special. then take her to a burning tire yard. when she starts to get upset tell her you were just kidding and now you're really going to take her to dinner. then drive her home. when she starts crying and asks why you would do something like that lean over and whisper very quietly into her ear "...because i can."

9. introduce her to your friends as "some chick". women love those special nicknames.

10. play with her hair. play with it HARD.

11. warm her up when shes cold...and not by giving her your jacket... then you might get cold. rather, look her in the eye and say "if you don't stop bitching about the cold right now you're going to be bitching about a black eye." the best way to get warm is with fear.

12. Take her to a party. When you get there shell have to go to the bathroom (they always do). Leave immediately. Come back right when the partys dying and yell at her the whole way home for ditching you at the party.

13. make her laugh. a good way to do this is if she has a small pet. kick the pet. i always find stuff like that funny. why shouldn't girls?

14. let her fall asleep in your arms. when she's fast asleep, wait 10 minutes then JUMP UP AND SCREAM IN HER EAR! repeat until she goes home and you can use your arms for more important things. like basketball.

15. Spit often. I hear girls like guys that spit.

16. if you care about her never ever tell her. this will only give her self confidence. then you can never turn her into the object she deep down desires to be.

17. Every time youre in her house steal one of the following: shoes, earrings, or anything else that comes in pairs. Only take one of the pair. This way shell go crazy.

18. Take her out to dinner. Right when shes about to order interrupt and say no shes not hungry. make her watch you eat. Girls love a guy that speaks for her.

19. look her in the eyes and smile. then clock her one. girls love a spontaneous guy.

20. give her one of your t-shirts......and make sure it has your smell on it. but not a sexy cologne smell. a bad smell. you know what i'm talking about.

21. When its raining keep asking her if shes crying. Shell say no its just the rain ten minutes later turn to her and just scream at her to stop crying you @#%$ baby. Girls like a tough man as i've already stated.

22. Titty twisters and plenty of them.

23. if youre listening to music, and she asks to hear it, tell her no. this way she'll think you're mysterious.

24. remember her birthday but don't get her something. Teach her material objects arent important. The only thing thats important is that she keeps you happy. And your happiness is the greatest present she can ever get.

25. when she gives you a present on your birthday, christmas, or just when ever, take it and tell her you love it. then next time you know she's coming over on a trash day leave the trash can open and have the present visibly sticking out of the can. girls actually don't like this one that much but i think it's funny.

26. If shes mad at you for not calling her when you say you will promise her that you will call her at a certain time of the day. This will make sure that she waits by the phone. Tell her when you call youre going to tell her a special surprise. Now shell be really excited. Now dont call.

If you just say it without value, of course it is worthless, but if you say it with meaning it is as if the clouds have lifted and the heavens opened.

It's a stupid phrase that is nothing but a lie. Now hear me out. Most feelings were created to clog your mind and distort decision making. Laughter, happiness and things of that nature are great but "love" was something created to cloud your judgement. If people just went by ethics and less emotion then we probably wouldn't have so many jews around.

If people just went by ethics and less emotion then we probably wouldn't have so many jews around.

Are ethics not emotional, because logically we'd all be better off individually if we weren't ethical? Collectively we may be better if ethical, but not individually.

As for your Jewish comment, it's not right to judge all jews based on the lawyers. There are many ethical doctors and scientists that are jews too and without all their tireless work and discoveries where would you be?

That made me think of this line from a movie, I think it was called the magician or something like that....in the movie he says I love you to his wife, she looks into his eyes and then says "not today you don't"

So if that is the case, if someone thinks the other is saying it to much, do you think it means the person saying that isn't really in love or should I say as in love as the other person?

i agree it cant be said too often if you truly mean it, in this day and age there is so much hate, love is rare, and meaningful true love even more so. Saying you never know when you will see the person again is morbid but so true.. i wish i had said it more to my father before he passed
