NEW YORK (AP) -- A peacock that roamed into the parking lot of a Burger King in New York City was beaten by a man who insisted it was a vampire.
Animal control officials in Staten Island say the bird was beaten so fiercely that most of its tail feathers fell out and it had to be euthanized.
The seven-year-old male peacock wandered into the restaurant parking lot and perched on a car hood last week. Charmed employees had been feeding it bread when the man appeared.
A restaurant worker says the man grabbed the bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started stomping it. She says when he was asked what he was doing, he responded, "'I'm killing a vampire!"'
Employees called police, but the man ran when he saw them.

btw was it even a peacock or is this a mistake from a noob reporter not knowing what bird it was. A peacock is a pretty large bird and not one that is particularly easy to grab and definitely not easy to throw on the ground and stomp on. They are extremely aggressive birds and afaik the only "bird" in India capable of killing the Indian King Cobra.

Unless someone had a mutated 2" version of a Peacock, I can't imagine someone handling a bird that size with the ease they make it out to be in the article.

UPDATE: this peacock was not a vampire; it was however an escaped slave peacock that had escaped from it's captors in a nearby neighbourhood. this is one of many illegally imported peacocks from overseas in this very elaborate underground peacock slave trade that has been going on for years. Rather than jeopardize the whole operation, the guy who killed it (for escaping, someone had to teach it a lesson right?) stated that it was a vampire. Better to look crazy, than go to jail for an underground slave peacock operation eh?

We used to have them on our property from time to time when I lived in the KC suburbs. Not exactly downtown Manhattan, but not really the sticks, either.
