Thats right, its party time once again and this weeks guest mix comes from Jacob Todd.
Growing up in Ithaca New York , Jacob Todd first got involved with music at the age of 13, playing bass in hardcore punk bands. Following college in Portland Oregon , Jacob moved to Boulder Colorado for graduate school in late 1999. It was in Boulder where he was first exposed to progressive trance and house music through frequent visits to the now defunct club Soma. Jacob started buying and spinning records towards the end of 2000.
His early interests revolved around the break beat sounds of DJ Icey but quickly matured, moving towards progressive trance and house. The deeper and darker sounds of progressive appealed to Jacob ? especially artists such as Chab, Sphere, and Lexicon Avenue . As he gravitated more and more towards progressive music, he still kept an ear to the breaks scene, always looking for the more progressive records that would occasionally surface ? while always wondering why there were not more.
It was in the beginning of 2002 that Jacob began trying his hand at production. Early on he decided to focus on break beats but instead of following the nu school or funky sound, he applied a progressive brush. He looked to merge the dark tribal sounds of progressive with the melodies of trance, doing so over a broken beat. Jacob's early work captured the attention of DJs Chloe Harris, Dave Preston and then Jonathan Lisle. Jonathan's support came at a time of technical and musical growth and led to the writing and eventual signing of a song called ?Nothing Is Real? to Jonathan's record label, M-Theory. Featuring the spoken word of M-Theory's Kevin Clark ?Nothing Is Real? is a hauntingly beautiful song that gives its listeners more questions than answers.
With Jonathan's seal of approval and a growing collection of songs, Jacob was able to start making more connections and getting his music into more hands. He has recently finished remixes for Hellpass Records, Navigation Records, and Institution Recordings as well as signing original songs with CP Recordings, Within Records, and Institution Recordings. Using the stage of electronic dance music, Jacob hopes to write songs that are as thought provoking and emotional as they are danceable.
