    Latino vs. Latina

    So I was always under the impression that Latino and Latina were just gender variations of the same word describing a particular ethnicity.

    My wife is arguing that they are two different ethnicities alltogether, that one man can be a Latino and another man a Latina . She sites that fact that Eva Longoria is commonly referred to as Latino.

    Can anyone clarify?

    Good question.

    I thought latino was the masculine depiction and latina was the femine depiction in reference to the peoples of latin america.

      Re: Latino vs. Latina

      is your wife latina?

      you can say latino when refering to race/ethnicity as a group, or latina as an individual

      ex.

      Eva Longoria is a latino woman.

      Eva Longoria is a latina.

      but you would never call a man latina. now there may be different dialects of spanish that do that, but i am unfamiliar with it.

          Re: Latino vs. Latina

          The English word Latino (Latina is the feminine form) may have derived from the Spanish word latinoamericano and most often refers to inhabitants of Latin America, and their descendents in the United States. It is the abbreviated use of 'Latin-American'; Francophone Canadians are not normally referred to as Latino, even though they speak a Romance language. A Latino person may be of any race ( Amerindian,White, Black, Asian or Mixed, such as Mestizo, Mulatto or Zambo).
          The concept of "Latin America" was coined by the French in the 1800s as a means of legitimizing French influence over the Spanish-speaking countries of the Americas; compare Latin Europe. Napoleon III, cited Am?rique Latine and Indochine as goals for expansion during his reign. He proposed the Monarchy in Mexico headed by the Austrian Archduke Maximillian or Maximilian I of Mexico. The term emphasized a common culture and history of the Romance language-speaking countries, as opposed to the Germanic language-speaking countries of "Anglo-America".

              Where are you from tree? the two places I've lived florida & california make this stuff about as common knowledge as what side of the street you should drive on.

              Lantinos = hispanic people (group)

              Latinas = female hispanics

              It was fun while it lasted...

People in southamerica should be called southamericans because thats how they call eachother. I think 2 % of the southamerican population has ever hear the therm "latino" before.

                            I come from a mixed background, my mother is French, my father is Portuguese, I've lived in Europe, South America, Mexico and the US. So what I meant is that this term is a general denomination given historically, not by choice just based on the language and geographical situation.

                              I totally disagree. Latino is shot for Latino Americano... as in ALL of the Americas. We call each other Latinos in South America. ALL of this other separation is bullshit. Castilian is Latin based, and Castilian no matter how bastardized by central and South Americans is still Castilian!

                              Languages spoken in different areas of Spain today:

                              Aragonese
                              Asturian
                              Basque
                              Cal?
                              Catalan-Valencian-Balear
                              Etc. etc.

                              The problem is that a LOT of Latinos that live in the US are really fucking ignorant about Spanish culture and their own heritage. They?re too busy trying to distance themselves from other Latinos, because of prejudices. So what ALL of you call Spanish is actually Castilian. AND all Castilain speakers that live outside of Spain are LATINOS!!!!!!!!
