    what do they all mean!!??

    Hi guys,

Here are some terms i'd like clarification on, and i may be in the same boat as many other people - you thinkyou might know what it means but you're not 100%. I'm sure with our combined efforts, we'll be able to have explanations from all and perhaps we may learn something!

vs (As in Cass vs Slide)
& (As in Cass & Slide) unsure if they mean the same thing

dub/redub (i think they mean the same thing)

mix/remix (i take it they're the same, correct me if i'm wrong) What i want to know with this one is what EXACTLY is a remix - does the remix artist seek permission from the original producer to "remix"? Does the remix artist gain samples/tracks/the original piece of work or does he come up a track that sounds like the original track? Also, why do we get remixes that sound NOTHING like the original?

    extended mix

    live mix

    cover

    mashup

    rehash

    edit

    re-edit

    vocal mix

    instrumental (mix)

    extended vocal mix

So there, there may be a few more and there are certainly combinations of these terms that you get sometimes that confuse ya even more for example

The Rolling Stones - Rain Fall Down Ashely Beedle's Heavy Disco Dub Re-edit

or BT Featuring Hybrid & Kirsty Hawkshaw -- Running Down the Way Up (Hybrid & BT vs Space Maneuvers Edit)

    have fun !

Was English your first language & what city were you born in?

Vocal Mix - if you buy a single track, the vocal mix is the track with the most vocals on it.

It was fun while it lasted...

Re: what do they all mean!!??

extended mix: the same choon, but a longer version

mashup: two existing songs mixed together making a new song

cover: I lack originality so I just play the other guy's stuff

That's all I felt like clarifying. Good first post btw. Keep it up

All the edits and shit, just take them as different interpretations of an original.

And what's the point of doing a remix if it sounds like the original?? Hearing another producer's take or input on another producer's track is what makes this genre of music interesting and "progressive."

^^^Made me laugh too!!! Nice one Jenksy! Fair question, but a lot of them are self explanitory. Im suprised that the list didnt overflow into genre names.

Yeah genre names are a much longer and contestable conversation, even with the main ones. Quite an aggressive intoduction to [ms] for the lad though. Come back Doosh, we're a friendly bunch really!

Re: what do they all mean!!??

extended mix - longer versions (usually there is something like a radio edit and a extended mix)

live mix - original track but performed recorded live.

cover - another artists doing the same song, can be different altered.

mashup - usually two songs mixed together (old term white label)

                          rehash - basically a remix

edit - edit of the original

re-edit - edit of the edit of the original

vocal mix - focus on the vocals of a selected track

instrumental (mix) - focus on the instrumental portion of the selected track

extended vocal mix - longer version of the original vocals of selected track.
