I was also concerned about the laptop world. I truly needed something for mobility and travel. It was a hard choice and after much reading and research the MBP came to light.

I think that is one of the main differences between PC and the Apple world. Apple constantly is working on getting there software better and better. While the PC world relies more on the hardware world. The keyboard on the MBP is really nice, I am actually very pleased it with it. Seems natural to me.

You gotta remember, it's Microsoft making an OS and others have to make hardware that runs it whereas at Apple, it's more like the SS where they run it all. I'm not saying good or bad but obviously if you have a company that makes the software to run on their own hardware, you're going to have less conflicts and it shouldn't be as problematic as what can happen on the PC side. You also need to remember that there are many third party companies that make shitty equipment for the PC world and it's the fault of the users who try to save a buck rather than go with good, quality parts. I don't see all of these weird issues that many people have and I'm thankful for that. I'm glad that I'm not some cheap ass. Ha ha.

how many gigs should i partition for windows vista on this mac? microsoft recommends 40gb with 15gb available. so 55gb?? seems a bit much for only wanting to run windows and my design program.

How big is your hard drive in total? If you're only going to use Vista and your design program, I wouldn't go any more than 20GB and that's being quite safe. There's no way you'd exceed that. Even if over time, the data from your design program goes over, you can always back that shit up on external and that will still be accessible with ease.

            160 gigs.

so, 20 vista and 140 osx? design program is sort of like autocad. do i need to account space for that too on the windows side, and include space for it's hd space requirements to run?

Shit. If it's 160GB then just make it 40 and you're golden. Shouldn't have to worry about it. Do you know how large each file is after you save it? That should give you a good estimate as to how much you want to partition and yes, you'd be accounting for the space to run your Windows application.

i say fuck vista and do a 10-20gb XP partition, but that is me...

on my MB, i have a 5gb xp partition to use my cpa software and still have 1gb free (not that i use it anyway). i went for the minimal since i will not be using windows on the MB nearly at all...

                  Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

15" macbook pro is great. I don't desire the 17". If i need a bigger screen it's usually when I'm at a desk and can plug in to an external monitor.

regular mac books are great too. It' s the os I like on mac these days.

My pro heats up really hot, and battery doesn't last forever. Honestly, the pro is going to die out in one way or another before you say "wow I really had this thing forever and now it's time to upgrade." The backlit keys are a non issue. You may ONLY want them because you don't have them. I've NEVER said "glad i have these!" and I work in the dark all the time.

I like my 120GB hdd and would love to have had the 180 but that's cause I have my audio library on here as well as parallels and lots of coding tools.

I would go at least 40 gb for vista (considering all the apps you'll install and updates, you'll fill it up mighty quick jenks)
