usenet (the service giganews provides access too, and also tons of files and retention because they have a shitload of EMC storage im sure) is like p2p, but since it is hard to use the riaa doesnt go after it since you gotta be a bit of a nerd to use it.

        more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

originally made for scientific/academic chat there is a hierarchy of groups each with a different topic (you can see the text groups at http://groups.google.com) dedicated to science, computers, unix, windows, etc. but when bandwidth got bigger people started uploading and creating binary groups too. so if one person uploads a binary to their news server, that box has x number of peers it sends the file to also so it is like a big spider web. so you just download all your "scientific research" from one place without any pesky snooping from the riaa etc, giganews since they have a shitload of bandwith and retention.

Gray area, but it's definitely an argument that you could make with a straight face. You're allowed to make a copy of media you own, no question. Especially in the age of digital music, they are functionally the same -- not too much difference between ripping it yourself and d/ling a copy of the exact same thing someone else has ripped. Is that legal? Maybe not within the strict letter of the law, but its a very arguable point.

On the flip side, owning the media doesn't necessarily entitle you to use every copy of the media wherever it may be. Like I said, gray area, although I suspect the RIAA would go for lower hanging fruit.

I used to use usenet (fuck this sentence, jeez) for my scientific research in the field of massive mamories back in the ol' days of the intarwebz. Never used it for sets though...

Torrents are usually pretty good for me for getting almost anything (mixingbowl.org is fucking ace for sets), other than that I use eMule every once in a while.

Prog kept me out of jail!

In Singapore, they're cracking down big time on the use of bittorrent to download anime (of all things!) because Odex, a local company, has licensed a host of anime series from Japan and they're pressuring the law to clamp down on anime downloaders despite the stuff we download being fansubbed and most of the time, are being screened on free-to-air TV in Japan.

There's this I2P network plugin thingie in Azureus and an option to not connect to public networks that I'm trying to figure out to save my anime-downloading ass.
