    Virgin Festival

Who went and what were your thoughts? Was anyone else slightly disappointed? I went on Saturday, August 4. Walked into the dance tent around 2:20pm to Booka Shade spinning some good tunes. I had missed Miguel Migs who spun from 1-2pm (heard I didn't miss much as he set wasn't all that). Lots of familiar tracks from Booka Shade that have been popular over the past year or so. All in all, an enjoyable set. They spun until a bit after 3pm.

Next up was Danny T.(4-6pm) I was prepared for his usual ramblings and was surprised that he wasn't as annoying as he was at Twilo in Miami during the conference. Started off playing some good tracks (typical D.T. stuff) and then went to shit. Played some horrible remixes of Top 40 songs that I must have erased from my memory cause I can't recall them as I type this.

The moment I was waiting for finally arrived a bit after 4pm...Sasha & Digweed. Sasha started the first hour and I thought did a good job considering the near 100 degree temperatures, lol! Digweed came on a bit after 5 and got deep right out of the gates , however it didn't flow well from what Sasha had been spinning and factoring in it was an outdoor event during the daytime, IMO. Didn't really enjoy his set. Seemed to be uninspiring. Sasha came back to the decks shortly after 6 and again didn't really disappoint but all in all I wasn't impressed with the duo's performance, especially Digweed.

Obviously I realize it's hard to get your flow and groove down with the short sets that usually accompany these festivals but still. I expected more.

On a brighter note there were about 20 of us that went and the day as a whole was filled with good people which made up for the musical short comings. I didn't have the desire to go to day 2. I hope it was better!!!

    Virgin Fest Review

Recovering from Virgin Fest and all I can say is what a concert series. Outdoor events in Aug. in Baltimore are hotter that hell, but it was worth the ticket price of $175 for the talent. The Buzzlife Tent was the only shaded area at Pimlico, and wherever you were standing you heard a deep pluse of beats blaring from the Buzz Tent. Danny Tenaglia killed it and still hear and crowd singing along to a wicked remix of REM "thats me in the corner." Danny was jumping and dancing around classic Danny fashion. It's hard to get the same feel in outdoor events vs. clubs night and some tracks are just made for clubs. Sasha and Digweed, put on a clinic in spinning progressive trance. The response was massive. I spoke to a few fellow MercuryServer's at the show and would love to see the photos and vids. The headliners the Police were amazing, they opened with a heated version of message in a bottle. Missed out on Sun. and gave my wristband to my buddy and he said Smashing Pumpkins and 311 killed it.

progressive trance??? isn't that a cheesy term for those that actually spin trance, but wanna try to bring in those that love prog too.

            Definitely not what S&D are.

The first thing Im gonna do is Post a few pics, then I will put in my two cents......

The Last Pic is of us. From Left to Right..... MS Members CimCima , Me (Jay Fury), Zeronineteen, and DVS.

Here are a few Videos from the set....

                Digweed

                Sasha

Now for my review of V-Fest. I went there to see 4 acts in particular. Obviously Sasha and Digweed, Deep Dish, Danny Tenaglia and James Zabelia. I could have cared less about anyone else that played. With that said, Im gonna have to say that Anthony is out of his mind (no offense), because S & D DONT PLAY PROGRESSIVE TRANCE. Tenaglia came on @ 4 and really got the place goin for the masters. Then Sasha came on at 6:00PM sharp starting off slow and mellow, just kinda setting the pace to build it up. Digweed came on @ about 35 minutes later and just started to BANG IT OUT for an hour. The place was goin crazy. Then Sasha came back on and kept building off of Diggers for about another 30 minutes. Then Digweed came back on and ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED the place. Dark and Heavy with RUMBLING basslines. I was FLIPPING out. Then for the last half hour they tagteamed and kinda brought it back down to a calming finish. All in all, for a 2 and a Half hour set- I was MORE than impressed. Zabelia was Great, and Deep Dish KILLED it on Sunday night. Other than that, the whole thing sucked ass. It was set up terribly. VERY expensive to eat, drink etc... It was 100 degrees both days, and there was no relief. The crowd sucked because it was mostly made up of of Dirty Hippies that belonged at a PHISH show and Candy Ravers who listene to Drum and Bass like Deiselboy....UGH.... Both of which annoyed the shit outta me. And Lastly, The fact that Sander Van Doorn and MIA headlined the 2 nights and Neither S & D nor Deep Dish did, tells you that they didnt want to take any people away from the Rock Band Headliners (The Police, 311 and Smashing Pumpkins). The whole Schedule Pissed me off........... BUT.... Like I said, I went mainly for 4 acts, and was happy with all 4. But Im obviously a Huge S & D fan, and I was more than happy with the set they played. I would go again in a second if they were playing, and thats the truth.

I feel quite opposite about the set. I thought sasha's set lacked and was a total vibe kill. He totally played the crowd and warmed the stage for digweed. John was unrelentless, played hard deep bangin beats. Lots of quick builders with magnificient breaks. The two of them side by side was another story though...I will have a full review with vids later tonite when I get home.

                    Re: Virgin Festival

I thought DT rocked it out and he played one "familiar" vocal which you would consider Top 40 - REM's Losing My Religion, so have no clue *HOW* you could say he was playing more stuff like that when he wasn't. And great to hear ATFC ft. onephatdeeva - In & Out Of My Life again as well.

Loved that Sasha started out with BURMA!!!

And as for the shaded area - you could go into the grandstand area where it was air-conditioned to get away from the exhaustive heat...so glad they did that this year.

Amy Winehouse, Fratellis and Beastie Boys rocked!!!

Agreed about Burma, nice start....even better though, it was an abelton edit straight from the man himself and not the original release. Very slow builder, all atmoshperical with no beat. Sounded good, have a vid that I'll post later.

yep - that was just so awesome "teasing" with what he was doing to it in Ableton....

i wondered if the sets were recorded at all?
