Bill Hicks 21.08.07 The First Rock 'n' Roll Comic (1 hour)

    (((Listen Again)))

    Broadcast on Radio 2 - Tueseday 21st August 22:30

This documentary tells the Bill Hick's story, the controversial American comedian with a distrust of governments and a dark sense of humour. Or in his words "Chomsky with dick jokes."

Bill Hicks died in 1994 from pancreatic cancer but he's a comedian who gets more popular each year. His anti-establishment sense of humour proved very popular with UK audiences in the early 1990's but at that same time found censorship at home in the US. He used comedy as a weapon to expose truths and show how he saw governments screwing people every day of their lives. He also happened to be achingly funny such was the accuracy of his comedy.

        Bills Hicks = the man.

Dane Cook is funny, but needs new material.

Carlos Mencia was funny..Now he is just annoying.

I do agree the man was a comedy genius, very ahead of his time.

However, I read a book about him - 'Agent of Evolution' and my opinion changed slightly.Seems sometimes he was a bit of a jerk. ncluding one time he slagged off troops in Vietnam or something and when a mother of a dead soldier protested he just ripped it out of her. That isn't funny to me really, and if it was my boy he was ripping it out of I wouldnt be amused

the guy opened for tool! after he died, they put short clips of his stand up in their song 'third eye'.

                        'nuff said!

                          ^^
Actually if you look at the liner notes, the whole Aenima album is dedicated to Bill Hicks, and most of the songs are based on things he talked about in his standup. For instance the title track talks about Los Angeles falling into the ocean and "Arizona Bay". Straight from Billy's mouth

That documentary just gave me the chills many times...thanks for that. Really well done and quite an interesting telling of his life.

It's kinda funny that I remember listening to Bill Hicks when I was in school in the 80s and early 90s when they ran his standup on Comedy Channel and Ha! (before they merged into comedy central) and any other late night comedy shows I could find. I was quite the comedy whore back in those days, though my love for it has never waned. I didn't even know his name (or at least my drug and alcohol-laden head couldn't remember it), but I always loved his routines and then he just disappeared and I never knew what happened. Until out of nowhere I hear about this comic Bill Hicks who'd become huge in England of all places and then I found out his sad story. Yet another great one who died well before his time.
