I'm surprised that anyone thought digital music stores are ruining dance music. More choices can't be a bad thing, just means you have to sift through more shit, but it's equilavent to the camping in the brick and motar stores to find an unexpected gem.
On a somewhat related note (unlimited choices, e-commerce), check out Chris Anderson's Longtail.

Yeah I read some of that, thought the article was mostly the guy saying the same thing over and over. The choice of tunes as being the only difference between a good dj and a great one....I don't think so. You are also forgetting timing, a great dj has to have great timing with his crowd. AND the dj needs to be technically good too. Because you don't wanna have to hear a feckin trainwreck every 6-7 minutes. EEEEK. To me that one thing is the difference between a good and great dj.Comment

All the above, there are so many more hidden gems and it gives people a chance to play something different, let others hear stuff that might not get exposed to, instead everyone playing the same stuff, yet if you look at what is popular at say beatport, that last statement might not hold much weight.Originally posted by ShpiraSo came back last night...
Sven Vath was amazing...he played a god damn killer set...ended up going to that and came to at like 10 am in some whore house in south Amsterdam...no idea how I ended up there...friday was a bit of a blur got really drunk and visited several parties can't remember a whole lot to be honest hehe...saturday was probably the best day that I recall...started up in the nearest coffee shop and going from party to party...beautiful woman, beer and weed...finished the night by taking some shrooms and listening to an amazing elke kleijn set...sunday...i met a nice girl who worked at one of the coffee shops and ended up talking to her for like 6 hours...was supposed to meet her at some DnB party...but instead went for a steak and walked around red light district bars drinking and smoking...monday took it easy went to a coffee shop and took a taxi to airport....
All in all...I think I will be going back there some time soon

oh yeah. i think the bulk of the real gems of beatport, are not the ones you find on the top 100 lists. You'll just end up sounding like all the other dj's. And that will NOT let you stand out from the bunch when it comes time for a new club to open up.Comment
