windows xp sp1 and dual core?

I"m looking into a new pc but i don't feel like buying vista (because it's still crap) so could i use my old windows xp sp1 on the new system?

this is what i'm thinking of buying:
    AOpen QF50D MIDITOWER 350WATA 55?
    Asus M2V. AM2? K8T890? 4XDDR2 PCIe 65?
    Hitachi deskstar T7K500 320gb 7200rpm 16mb 69?
zalman silent CPU Cooler Dual core 59?
    2x Kingston Dimm 1GB DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 118?
    XFX GeForce 8500 GT 512MB 92
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 bulk 25?
(or keep the old audigy 5.1 shouldn't be much difference i think?)
    Belkin wireless network card 33?

sums up to 584? all together and that includes putting it together, the only thing left to do would be installing windows, that's not a problem as long as it works ofcourse

I'm gonna keep the old dvd writer and cd player, screen keyboard and mouse they are still just fine
i've got another 600gig storage already here so 320gb should be fine too

Well, I'm currently on vista ultimate 64bit running without any problems. I used to have some problems with 2-3 games but i figured them out. The only problem I have and can't be solved is my laser printer. Konica will never release drivers compatible with vista 64bit for the specific model. So i'll just sell it and buy a new one.
Regarding your situation, if you are a high-end gamer then I would suggest you to buy the 8800gtx instead of the 8500. BTW what's your processor?

      oh yeah forgot to mention it: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+, 2.6Ghz, 2Mb, AM2, 65W, Box

and i'm not a very heavy gamer besides the 8800 gtx is way over budget, the 8500gt should be a good improvement for the geforce2 me thinks

Windows Vista is not crap, if you have the latest updates that is.

Sp1 is not prepared to run 100% good on dual core processors so unless you get the new fix from microsoft.com (which will be included in XPsp3) you might experience some degradation in performance windows will be fast and run but not quite 100% so make sure you get this fix.

Just get SP2 and you'll be golden. SP3 is already leaked out too. You can find it on many sites.
