have to say i thought this film was a load of shit, imo, i mean the ending was pretty pointless. have to admit though ben fosters performance was superb-worth going to see the film just for this. really hated this film. had very good potential too with the likes of bale.

What was pointless about the ending?

It seemed to fit in pretty well with the rest of the movie. All macho bullshit.

Bale was a deflated and incapable pussy and it ended with him still being incapable (but humoured by Crowe) and just being slightly less of a pussy - but a hero in the eyes of his boy. Nicely tied up neat blockbuster ending. Resolved with lots of violence and ego stroking.
and Crowe got to flex his brawn and do the whole anti-hero-toughguy-comes-good-in-the-end because he's so smart routine

having integrity and being a hard-ass = instant vote winner normally, storywise at least. It was pretty standard and formatted, but the ending didn't stand out as being pointless to me.

I agree compleatly the ending was sooooo out of place it could have been done much better. Its just not realistic. Are we to belive that a guy spends his whole life as an outlaw and than some farmer ex soldier shows him how wrong his ways have been and he kills his friends and goes off to jail....this films ending reminded me in many ways of Guy Ritchies Revolver...had potential but ruined with the ending...

loved this film until the last section of the last act. absolute shambles and no mistake. other than that is a brilliant film. love crowe. he can do no worng in my book. quality film after quality film.. should of smacked the screen writer for the ending though. madness! has to be seen to be beleived

Caught this one today.... BRILLIANTLY made. I agree that the end was a little out of belief that the one legged dime ranch owner made the hard ass see the light, especially when his own "gang" risked everything they had to come back and rescue him, which in itself was something that should've taught him a thing or two, but no he doesn't go off to jail. The point was that he was to "get on" the 310 to Yuma, not to "get to" Yuma, that's why he whistles to his horse.

I really enjoyed the movie though.
