Sometimes things that seem to mundane and blatant in our eyes are the building blocks to deeper and more recognizable research. There is no doubt that the scientists and/or researchers that discovered this are "real" scientists (as you so eloquently put it). For instance, this research could prove to lead to new language arts education techniques, teaching illiterates to read and write, or prove to be a stepping stone to another function of our brain that we've yet to map and explore.

...or it can make it harder for the illiterate to learn to write. I've heard potheads think of crazier stepping stones than this. (Human Traffic Star Wars scene?)

I wasn't saying that this research itself would make it easier to teach people to read and write but it may open the door to some other techniques. Believe me the end will justify the means.

I'm not saying it isn't... I'm just saying it was much more interesting the first time I read it.
