Re: Increasing headphone jack signal level
I ran RCAs from my office, through the walls, through the ceiling, then the walls, and to my living room. I have my computer plugged into my amp in my home stereo via the 3.5mm headphone plug.
I also ran 4 speaker wires from the living room through the ceiling to outside on my new deck. this stuff works great.
the problem is the headphone levels are way low, and when I turn up my amp to full volume the speakers (inside or outside) can't get louder than below-normal listening volume. I want to amplify the level of this signal so I can pump the music from my computer through my living room stereo to my living room or outside speakers.Comment

Re: Increasing headphone jack signal level
I had the same problem with my onboard sound card just not getting loud enough.
Never regretted going with an X-fi but I did waste the extra money going with the extreme gamer instead of the extreme audio.Comment

Re: Increasing headphone jack signal level
Hi!
Maybe if you wont plug your computer to the amp, by the headphone jack, it would be louder. Im using an RCA-jack converter to plug my Pc into the amp. No problems with the volume level. By the way, how long is the cable You're using? Becouse there can be a sound level fall (resitance of the cable) if its too long! If you buy thicker cables (lower resistance) it could also solve the problem...Comment

And don't forget to NOT run your audio cables near power cables.Comment

Re: Increasing headphone jack signal level
funny you mention that... they aren't near any power cables but I do have a *lot* of noise. I used 8-guage wire through the ceiling for the RCAs. i have no clue what to do about it... the speakers sounds fucking great when playing a CD/DVD/stereo on the amp but when tuning to the computer input via the RCAs (run parallel with them most of the way in the ceiling) I have a lot of noise. do they make shielded wire? the 8-guages that I used were cut out of some old PA equipment a while back ago but I know it's quality stuff.

Re: Increasing headphone jack signal level
Ohh my, i think its certainly becouse of the length of the cables, as i watch your pictures...I don't really know if there are shielded cables, I think there are... Im using very thick cables in my car, to connect the car stereo with the amp in the trunk. They're about 4-5mmthick(each wire!!).
I was askin my father (Im an electrical engineer) who was a Dj long ago(1978-1986) :-D so he had problems with noise when he used his stuff.
So here are some solutions that we made together:
Try to listen to the Pc's outcoming signal if its noisy(so dont plug it into the amp, just listen to it with headphones. Don't play any kind of music, just push the volume to the max on the pc, than listen into your headphones if you can hear any noise. If you do, than your Pc's soundcard is very noisy by default, try to get a better one.
Try to use thicker cables if possible. Becouse they can get a lot of noise from the environment. Thats becouse the outcoming sound level is way lover than the sound level what you put trough the speaker wires. And when noise is added to a low signal and than you amplify the low signal with lot noise, the noise is getting amplyfied too (SNR - Signal to Noise Ratio)...And thats becouse the CD/DVD/Stereo sound good, becouse the noise is very low there...And the speaker cables cant add much noise, becouse there's the amplified signal.(I hope you can understand me, im from Hungary so sorry if i made mistakes, plz ask if you can't understand anything, ill try to explain)
I think ill wait till you try solution 1 than we'll figure out what the problem is!
Another thing!:
you wrote:
"I want to amplify the level of this signal so I can pump the music from my computer through my living room stereo to my living room or outside speakers."
It will be very noisy(The thing that i mentioned above "signal to noise ratio") so this is not the solution you should make!Comment

Re: Increasing headphone jack signal level
Get a pre-amp going and yes, there are shielded cables.Comment
