The following is quite technical for a simple downloader but you are never too smart ( read on ) you might get an understanding of what is involved in order to get good quality sets to you.
This set was broadcasted in 256kbps by ETN.fm and ripped with streamripper. The undecoded MP3 file was cut with mp3DirectCut (to remove skips), optimized with mp3packer (removing a buffer underrun of frame "0" and converting the CBR MP3 to VBR), Audioshell (adding ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags) and MP3val (correcting the MP3-file length reported by the MP3 header for proper seeking). mp3Gain was used to avoid clipping by scaling the Global Gain and to add ReplayGain tags. Special note: ETN.fm is notorious for buffer underruns and skips. There are not many in this release but I can't exclude that some will be present (I didn't find these errors).
Final (superior) quality: 254kbps 44.1kHz VBR stereo MP3. All MP3-players will play this file as usual.
And finally, after all the optimizations, the MP3 file has been improved even more - a third (for normal stereo mp3-players invisible) channel with 17kbps 5.1 surround extension has been added with the MP3SX converter (MP3SX has been developed by the developers of MP3 themselves!) . These extra 17kbps re-route the ambience of the stereo file to 5.1 speakers plus a mono content detection. The file shows itself as a 271kbps MP3 (the first 254kbps are the original stereo). This is not a so-called "nuked" file! Check the Fraunhofer explanations HERE. A software player for the MP3SX / MP3 Surround content can be found at all4mp3.com. Alternatively install the newest and brand-new Winamp 5.36 that comes now with native mp3Surround / mp3SX support!
