Got a new job need some pointers on InDesign?

So I got a new job where I use Photoshop and InDesign and I'm awesome with Photoshop, but I'm not very good with InDesign. Anyone have any pointers for the most important factors to take into account with InDesign. Making brochures and employee editorials will be a large part of the job, I understand the concept of slugs, bleed room, and text boxes, but how do I actually figure out the actual dimensions for a brochure and stuff? Starting to ramble, any pointers would be appreciated...

Im not really a graphical designer, im just the person at my company that most knows how to use photoshop/indesign.

Few things i've learnt along the way:

• Indesign is a really irritating program... its only really good for the text and layout side of things. If you want a document with any impact at all, you really need to rely heavily on photoshop.
• Make your design elements in photoshop as seperate PSD files with (transparent backgrounds if required).
• Keep your PSD and INDD files named and organised well in a single directory.

It is not a difficult program to use, just frustrating. You have to use it a lot to really get comfortable and push the program boundaries. There are books that may help you with simple processes, but investment of time will be your friend with this program.

I think it is a great program, and probably the best tip is to plan ahead on your project on how you want it look, its not easy to just do things on the fly, keep your layers in some kind of order be images or text and also make use of the grids, they are great help and will help you get a balanced look on your documents, also the new CS3 will help you get a streamlined process with photoshop, have fun.

get some video tutorials for indesign, and get a book about basic doc sizes such as a4, a3, DL, 8 page folds etc.... this should include basic layout principles too
