To move or not to move ...

    ... that is my question

An opportunity has presented itself to Chris and I that involves us moving overseas to the UK. Stoke on Trent to be precise. My father was born and raised in Scotland, which entitles me to my dual citizenship with the UK, which makes moving easier for me. I am in the process of obtaining this now, but it takes some time and costs around $400 CDN. Chris will be getting a sponsored work Visa to enable him to move.

I have been over to visit 3 times (Scotland, and England) in my life thus far and have loved every minute of it, but living there is another thing.

I have been talking with red1 and he has provided me with some insight and some job sites to have a look around. My field is Human Resources and it looks like there are decent jobs over there in that field, so it's hopeful. I would like to have a job lined up before getting there (obviously ideal), but Chris will have a job to bide us a bit of time, but I know it's pricey over there, so the sooner the better.

So what I am asking those of you who live in the UK for some insight on prices, flats, what to expect, anything that may benefit me. Our tentative move date would be April, so we have time, but not tonnes.

    Any help is appreciated

k, i don't live in the UK, but I have something to add... get your dual citizenship no matter what. having an EU passport is a big deal, and alot of people would kill to get one (myself included). you can work in any EU country with no hassels...

you never know when they'll alter a law and you won't be able to get your UK passport, so do it now. Once you have one, you'd likely be grandfathered in to any changes.

so it sounds like Chris is the one who's got the opportunity gig to move over there.

Hey if you can get something lined up beforehand, it'll definitely make the trip easier....but it sounds like something that would be worth taking advantage of for the next several years minimum.

Sounds like fun...people need to move more to shake up their lives a bit.

i would do it for sure... i can get my irish citizenship the same way as yourself... and thought about doing it.

i spent a lot of time in germany this year and loved being in europe and would take the opportunity to work there if i was given it. and best of all its you and chirs... my idea of a life is to have a companion to travel the world with... and get up and go whenever... finding one is hard... i say dont even think twice about it

Yeah it is definitely an amazing opportunity that I didn't think I would ever be faced with so I am 90% on board...it is just going to be an expensive venture. Selling off all my belongings will be strange as we can't very well ship furniture, etc as thats not reasonable and would be quite costly.

I am also definitely getting my dual citizenship regardless...I have been meaning to for quite some time now,but just kept putting it off...I have motivation now so I should have it soon

                      Yeah I have heard that.

Anyone have a general idea of what we would be looking at pricing wise for a flat? We would be renting, not buying

Why don't you just keep your place you have here with all of your stuff and come back and visit from time to time?

I would like to do something like that, but I don't make enough to pay for 2 places....subletting would be ideal, but I can't do that as we rent from Chris' friend's dad and as soon as Chris' friend is done Grad School they are selling the place...so that gets rid of that option
