It needs to be anything like `The Joshua Tree` then and only then are we in for a good one. I have everything U2 have ever released up untill `Pop` but for me they just went all comercialy popy and lost there rock tag. I understand some fans are a little shorter in the tooth than i am and grew up with the likes of Pop and ATYCLB and thats fair enough but i beg you to listen to `Wide Awake In America` or `War` that is The boys at there best for me.
As for the new single i just caught the last minute or so of it on the radio at it didn`t sound too bad. Here`s hoping......
I don't know for sure that he didn't, but they should have gotten Brian Eno to produce it for them. Nearly all of their best albums were done with him. As Bono said, 'Other bands went to Art College. We went to Brian.'
cheers, RH

just like any great band, their sound has evolved with time.
IMO - the greatest bands of all time - bands like the beatles and led zeppelin evolved from their first album to their last, experimenting and trying new things, developing from the previous efforts. i'm sorry - but i don't want another 'joshua tree' or anything disticnly similar to what they have already done - it's been done already.
regardless, i eagerly await the new album. i thought ATYCLB was awesome. and i do think that U2 is one of the greatest bands of all time.
It needs to sound anything like Achtung Baby - now that is there best album!

I heard the new single on the radio yesterday, before I knew it was them. For some reason I couldn't identify it as them. Anyway, I thought it was medicore. But I will give it and the entire album a chance.
I haven't really listened to them much since the old days, but I saw them live in 10/2001 (at MSG, NYC) and they were amazing. Make no mistake, they still got it.

Cannot agree more! Getting a bit fed up with people who keep talking about 'the old days' - this is a progressive forum. Doesn't that link to progression?
It's totally fair if a band evolves, progresses or whatever, it isn't your cup of tea anymore. But you can at least appreciate the fact that they don't just copy their success infinitely, taking the paved roads. What makes U2 a great band is that they do have the balls to change and still attract a lot of people (maybe not the same ones, but still a large group).
We'll see what the new album will bring and if I'm still 'tuned in' to their music!
My life is full of dark times and times when the sun breaks through and makes everything okay again.
People don't know how uplifting music is, until they have been through the dark.
