Mt. Saint Helens ... Going ...

    9-24-04

SEATTLE -- Swarms of tiny earthquakes at Mount Saint Helens could indicate that a small amount of magma is moving into the crater, cracking the lava dome.

Washington state seismologist Tony Qamar says it's unlikely there is any hazard to anyone outside the crater. Qamar says the seismology lab at the University of Washington in Seattle is having trouble keeping up with the hundreds of tiny quakes that began yesterday and show no sign of letting up today.

There was a similar swarm in 2001 that resulted in no eruption. There has been no significant activity at Mount Saint Helens since the 1980 blast that killed dozens of people.

                        09-26-04
VANCOUVER - Scientists say several earthquakes recently on Mt. St. Helens indicate the volcano could produce explosions.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory, and the University of Washington Dept. of Earth and Space Sciences, seismic activity at Mount St. Helens has changed significantly during the past 24 hours.

The movements show some of the earthquakes are of a type that suggests the involvement of pressurized water and steam or even magma.

Scientists say such explosions the dome and crater floor are at greatest risk from ballistic projectiles, but the rim of the crater and flanks of the volcano could also be at risk.

According to a news release, explosions would also be expected to produce ash clouds that drift downwind at altitudes up to several thousand feet above the crater rim, along with landslides and debris flows.

All climbing permits have also been cancelled on the mountain.

Experts say they will continue to monitor the situation closely.
