VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Scientists watching Mount Saint Helens say a monitor indicates the lava dome in the crater has moved an inch-and-a-half.

They say that could mean pressure is building up in the volcano from gasses or magma and that an eruption is possible within days.

Scientist Jeff Wynn at the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver cautions it will take at least 48 hours before scientists are more confident in the measurements.

A seismologist at the observatory, Seth Moran, says the swarm of earthquakes that began last Thursday have increased in frequency. He say they are now occurring at the rate of three a minute. Some are magnitude two.

Officials have said they believe any eruption would be likely confined to the crater. They do not expect a repeat of the 1980 blast that killed 57 people, leveled forests and dumped ash over the Northwest.
