    Colbert to Run for President

Did anyone see this last night?

NEW YORK - Stephen Colbert has announced his candidacy for president on "The Colbert Report," tossing his satirical hat into the ring of an already crowded race.

"I shall seek the office of the president of the United States," Colbert said Tuesday on his Comedy Central show as red, white and blue balloons fell around him.

Colbert, 43, had recently satirized the coyness of would-be presidential candidates by refusing to disclose whether he would seek the country's highest office — a refusal that often came without any prompting.

Shortly before making the announcement, Colbert appeared on "The Daily Show" (the show that spawned Colbert's spin-off) and played cagey, claiming he was only ready to consider a White House bid. He entered the studio set pulled by a bicycle pedaled by Uncle Sam and quickly pulled out a bale of hay and a bottle of beer to show that he was "an Average Joe."

I thought this part was hysterical:

In a guest column for Maureen Dowd in Sunday's New York Times, Colbert wrote: "I am not ready to announce yet — even though it's clear that the voters are desperate for a white, male, middle-aged, Jesus-trumpeting alternative."

Really curious if he'll actually make an effort to get on the ballot in SC. He's definitely been known to take his on-air jokes into the real world before. Should be funny, no matter what...

Did not, looked unwatchable. Robin Williams hasn't been funny since he stopped doing coke, IMO. Was it any good?

this guy is hilarious...I'd be surprised if he really would, but glad to see that he's capitalizing on every bit of humor with the whole thing - and there's a lot there on which to capitalize

has anyone read his book yet?? I'm curious to thumb through a copy at the bookstore soon...

if he actully did run, he would only help the republicans because most voeters that would vote for him (as a joke or not) would probably vote dem.

I'm reading his book now. Mixed review from me on his book at this point half way through. There are some funny things and some not so funny.

An obvious publicity stunt by Colbert. It would be funny if he could ever get enough votes to be in an actual debate.

Btw, that Man of the year movie with Robin Williams was terrible.

Evidently Colbert was serious enough about this to consult the Republican and Democratic parties in SC prior to announcing his run:
