    disadvantages of buying a mac

so want a new laptop, or desktop if i go with a mac, but im very hesitant after all these years of using a PC, so i was wondering what are the disadvantages!
i pretty much use my pc for downloading music, using souls seek, surfing online.
what do u suggest? should i pay less and stick with a pc or pay more and go pro?

Re: disadvantages of buying a mac

There are other discussions around here that touch on the same question. Do a search for MacBook.

That said, you'll definitely be happy with a mac. Soulseek doesn't have a mac client, but you can always use Parallels to run Windows in a virtual machine - or use Apple's Boot Camp. If all you do is surf and do e-mail - the mac does a great job. And you don't have to worry about all the security problems and spyware Windows gets cluttered with.

You don't necessarily pay more for a Mac, compared to PC hardware of the same spec.

Dell, HP, etc. have a wide variety of laptops to blanket the market with choices for any buyer type. Apple simply aggregates some of the best hardware that makes a good package and says, "this is what you want." The simplicity of choices isn't because it's simplistic, but an equally priced Dell comes in close to $100-$200 difference on a MacBook Pro.

Colleagues at work (we're all PC) love my Mac Book Pro, and I've essentially talked all of them into one as well. They're just waiting for the right time to buy.

You definitely won't be disappointed. That is, unless you have very particular software needs that only run on PC - which is typically relegated to special video editing, or other specific needs. For general purpose, the Mac is definitely superior.
may the groove be with you

Actually, there is a Soulseek client for Mac...It's called SoulseeX..It's a bit unstable at times, but it works.. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17228

I've been talking to Mac users on slsk for years so there are some options there. You can't use Winamp on a Mac but I guess that's minor. Just stay away from iTunes. It makes your music sound even worse. The only disadvantages you'd face are the downtime with figuring things out but that's just dependent on your learning curve. You'll enjoy it. First computer I had was the first Mac back in '85 I believe. Loved that thing. Used it until it died.

That is completely untrue. You do end up paying more for a Mac and I'm not saying that's bad at all but to say that you don't pay necessarily more is an atrocity to your own self.

When I looked for a new computer, I compared prices between Dell HP and Mac with more or less the same specifications. At the end the price of the imac was about 100 bucks more than the other two.

                    iMacs don't count.
I was also including the prospect of building a computer as well. You can get a better computer than a Dell or HP if you build it yourself and for cheaper.

Here's an example. You can get a Q6600 with motherboard, 2GB or RAM, 250GB HDD, 19" monitor, decent case, mouse, keyboard, Vista Home Premium, etc. for around $620 if you look well enough at the sales. That's a pretty damn good deal for what you're getting.

                        Price and upgrading options.

My MBP 4 gig monster does circles around Windows. I will never touch that pathetic OS again.
