    Oh come on

You know how the Democrats had -- at least until Dodd stepped in and put a hold on the bill -- caved on the FISA bill and agreed to include a provision granting retroactive immunity to telecom companies? Well, turns out there was a good reason for that, and the reason is that Sen. Rockefeller was raking in donations from telecom companies:

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 — Executives at the two biggest phone companies contributed more than $42,000 in political donations to Senator John D. Rockefeller IV this year while seeking his support for legal immunity for businesses participating in National Security Agency eavesdropping.

The surge in contributions came from a Who’s Who of executives at the companies, AT&T and Verizon, starting with the chief executives and including at least 50 executives and lawyers at the two utilities, according to campaign finance reports.

This, right here, is why we need a drastic change in the people we have running the country. More and more, I'm becoming convinced that the leadership in this country is motivated purely by their own self-interest. That's not really news to most people, I suppose, but it does help explain some things.

Why do the democrats continue to capitulate to the least popular president in history, a guy who has no political capital and lacks the ability to foist his will on the country any more? Why do they allow warrantless wiretapping? Why do they continue to bend over backwards to compromise on the war?

Reason: because it doesn't affect their ability to stay in power. Right now, Bush's approval rating is around 25%, which is the about the same as what Nixon had when he was forced to resign. The biggest difference between Nixon and Bush, however, is that Nixon was spying on Democratic politicians, while Bush is just spying on citizens. Nixon's behavior was a threat to their power, while Bush's is just a threat to ordinary Americans. As long as Bush continues on the path he's on, the GOP is toast, and democrats will continue to gain power.

Although I've supported the democrats, at least nationally, for the last couple of elections, I care zero about whether or not this particular group of people stays in power. What about the people that elected you?

    Re: Oh come on

i'm not super-duper into politics, but i do pay attention and i do know this... if hillary gets elected, the power of the people will diminish big time and yes, all she cares about is herself and how much power she can wield. the more i hear from her and about her, the more i realize the similarities between her and past DICTATORs. self-absorbed and a desire to be in control.

toasty, your point about self-interest is the way i view almost all politicians these days and although i'd like to say there is a correct choice for president next year, politicians lie so much it makes it impossible to pick the best one for the job. personally, i think fred thompson is trying to convey a brighter future and a step in the right direction with his approach, but i'm not convinced anyone can turn this country around in the right direction. the world has gotten so vastly complicated in the last few years that there are so many major issues facing our nation, it is almost impossible to agree with one candidate 100%.

      Re: Oh come on

I agree with you about Hillary. I'm concerned that she will say anything to get elected, and will just give us more of the same. For me, the only person that really brings anything new or different is Obama, IMO.

One thing I like about the guy is that he does not just tell people what they want to hear. He went into Detroit and endorsed tougher fuel efficiency standards and endorsed merit-based pay for teachers to the nation's largest teachers' group, which opposes it. For all the firestorm it caused, I happen to agree with him on the meeting with our enemies and being willing to go into Pakistan upon actionable intelligence (which has always been US policy, by the way). I never really wonder where he stands on things.

I saw him speak a few months ago before the National Urban League, which is predominantly an African-American group. You might think that it would be an ideal time for him to do some pandering, but he did not. He still delivered his message in terms of all Americans, not African-Americans and actually delivered a message that was less focused on the interests of African-Americans specifically than Clinton or Edwards.

Biggest concern I have is that he really needs to display more leadership on bigger issues -- he gets some credit, IMO, for holding the right position on issues I care about, but I would have liked for him to be the one to put the hold on the FISA bill rather than just joining Dodd after he did so.

I like Thompson on some issues (mostly fiscal), but his position on social issues is way too far right for my taste, to the point that I couldn't in good conscience vote for him. I also question whether he wants it enough to survive the rigors of 12 months of non-stop campaigning.

obama is very charismatic. he is the only candidate i can really believe that what he says is what he means. i'm just against a lot of his issues (to each their own). if it comes down to it, i wouldn't mind him being elected though. he definitely sees the big picture; there is no I in USA (that's a pretty clever slogan, eh?).

and although i do like fred thompson, i agree with your point about will-stay. i don't know that i trust him as much as obama! fred's very smart, but he needs to prove to me still that he's determined to stick it out for the long haul. lord knows hollywood stars don't like to be criticized for their work.

Ron Paul would certainly make things interesting. Very passionate, and I agree with his views on a number of issues. There is a large "crazy old man" vibe with Paul, though.

yeah, i took some poll and it said ron paul was the most similar with my views. i hadn't heard of him before that poll though. then i saw some hoo-hah on [ms]. so i went to his website and read a little bit about him and his responses on issues, although they seem ok, were very vague. i'd like to see him more up front and open about his views.

                Re: Oh come on

He's best known for his vitriolic opposition to the war, which is a major departure from the rest of the GOP field. The thing that makes him a bit problematic, for me, anyway, is that he takes the "small government" concept to an extreme. I'm all for limited government in a broad sense, but there definitely are tasks that the government is in a good position to address. He's a big proponent of home schooling, for example, which I think is asinine.

He's as close to a pure libertarian as any mainstream candidate in years. That's really good, in some respects, not so good in others...

so what's your stance on him, then? in regards to the other runners in the GOP, and versus Hillary.

                    Re: Oh come on

I reserve the right to change my mind on this, but I'd probably prefer Ron Paul over the entire GOP field with the possible exception of Giuliani, mostly because of Giuliani's stance on social issues.

When it comes to Hillary, I just don't like the gal. I don't believe her and I don't really respect her. Her views are probably closer to my own right on more issues than Ron Paul as I sit here right now, but I'd have to think long and hard about whether to vote for her or Ron Paul. We could do much worse than to have Ron Paul as President, I will say that.

Right now Hillary is way ahead in the polls to get the Democratic nomination. However, the Republicans are smart and good at winning elections and will do things to make her look bad, power hungry or whatever else they can think of.
