You know how the Democrats had -- at least until Dodd stepped in and put a hold on the bill -- caved on the FISA bill and agreed to include a provision granting retroactive immunity to telecom companies? Well, turns out there was a good reason for that, and the reason is that Sen. Rockefeller was raking in donations from telecom companies:
This, right here, is why we need a drastic change in the people we have running the country. More and more, I'm becoming convinced that the leadership in this country is motivated purely by their own self-interest. That's not really news to most people, I suppose, but it does help explain some things.
Why do the democrats continue to capitulate to the least popular president in history, a guy who has no political capital and lacks the ability to foist his will on the country any more? Why do they allow warrantless wiretapping? Why do they continue to bend over backwards to compromise on the war?
Reason: because it doesn't affect their ability to stay in power. Right now, Bush's approval rating is around 25%, which is the about the same as what Nixon had when he was forced to resign. The biggest difference between Nixon and Bush, however, is that Nixon was spying on Democratic politicians, while Bush is just spying on citizens. Nixon's behavior was a threat to their power, while Bush's is just a threat to ordinary Americans. As long as Bush continues on the path he's on, the GOP is toast, and democrats will continue to gain power.
Although I've supported the democrats, at least nationally, for the last couple of elections, I care zero about whether or not this particular group of people stays in power. What about the people that elected you?
WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 — Executives at the two biggest phone companies contributed more than $42,000 in political donations to Senator John D. Rockefeller IV this year while seeking his support for legal immunity for businesses participating in National Security Agency eavesdropping.
The surge in contributions came from a Who’s Who of executives at the companies, AT&T and Verizon, starting with the chief executives and including at least 50 executives and lawyers at the two utilities, according to campaign finance reports.
