Before I took up DJing, I used to go to raves in the early and mid 90's. Back then the music was actually cool and not the super cheese you hear in recent years. In SF back in the mid 90's the dominating style was house where the likes of Jeno, Simon, Tony, Carlos and them played. They also played at the clubs too (they still do). Over the past 5 years it's been cheese trance, hard house and music that is absolutely crap. Seen the people attending them getting younger too and you can say it's almost like going to a high school event.

I rarely get booked at raves yet I'll play them. It's all about the whammy bammy tunes for them!

i actually got into raves after i got into music, digweed is what brought me into the scene believe it or not ( most ppl tend to mature, or evlove into prog) a lot of old school ravers bug out when i play heavan scent in my car ( its an "old" rave song)
ther are still fuck heads getting fucked up, but not as much anymore,
most of them keep it under control..
but evemn the rave scene now is more commercial then it was... its not as underground, and whenit is.. its not as fun... ravers are SHADY mother fuckers...
i just like to go to these partys with friends and bug out like crazy...
i was surprised to hear the best electro set ever @ a rave, absolut mix @ demara nyc, keoie, was spinnign, at first half the ravers looked soo freakin confused, then they got into it,
i was shcoked when he spun, fleix the house cat, watching cars go by ( sahsa)
i got into raves by my x-boyfriends...
      ravers *ARE* shady motherfuckers.

              Re: raves..

Every single urban community goes through the EXACT same rave process.

              First: underground, exciting, new, rebelious
              then: sooooo much fun
finally: a community of jaded people talking about "how good the parties used to be"

It starts up in different years in different places but it always ends up following the same pattern everywhere.

In toronto it was new in the very early 1990's, fun through the mid 1990's, and then jaded thereafter. But, at the end of the 1990's there were some crazy good huge 10 000+ parties in Toronto. It always gets huge and fun, and then it gets too big and then Government has to do sometime because its too public and they do stuff to kill it and then after this it can still be good, but its never really the same. In Toronto they implemented a law stating that a certain amount of police officers had to be hired for each rave, making it to expensive to throw big raves, thus killing the big raves. In the U.S. they have different laws, but it has the same effect. Anyway its fun to move around and see the different stages of different scenes in different places. And really a party is a party is a party, so as long as there's a party somewhere, its all good.

                Re: raves..

but beyond the politics of it all there really is nothing like being in the middle of thousands of people all going off with the bass ripping your ears out. Its frikkin' amazing. You feel truly feel alive at moments like that. There's nothing else like it.
I like the quote from Human traffic about it:

"The weekend has landed. All that exists now is clubs, drugs, pubs and parties. I've got 48 hours off from the world, man. I'm gonna blow steam outa my head like a screaming kettle and talk codshit to strangers all night. I'm gonna lose the plot on the dance floor; the free radicals inside me are freaking man! Tonight I'm Jip Travolta, I'm Peter Popper - I'm going to Never Never Land with my chosen family man. We're gonna get more spaced out than Neil Armstrong ever did. Anything could happen tonight ya know! This could be the best night of my life! I've 73 quid in my back burner, I'm gonna wax the lot, the Milky Bars are on me. Yeah!"

we've had our share of "raves" here in Ohio and surrounding areas. Mostly they end up having something that almost makes them a complete disaster. But they still stay afloat. There might be a really good one around new years around here.

The Polite (Coppers) didn't show up until 7 hours into the party, and never shut it down. My friend and I were in an unknown part of Amsterdam, far from our hotel, and surrounded by total strangers. Yet it appeared to be the safest place to be. The whole night reminded me of high school all over again. You know the feeling when you're being bad, but because you're underage you're invincible. That night was great, the people were chill, the beats were top shelf, and then...the come down.

Raves don't really exist in the UK anymore. Used to go to them in the early 90's though.
