I have always been a keen believer in using high-end kit to get the best out of my music, and with this in mind, I am wondering if anyone can recommend some seriously good earphones to get the best out of an ipod?

I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.
You need to remember that you really don't need high end earphones or ear buds since you're going to be using it to hear compressed audio. If you get high end, you're going to be very annoyed at hearing the limitations of the compressed audio. Especially, through an iPod which has lower quality sound output already.

I hear ye but I simply want to get as much from my mp3s as possible. I listen to my music on Cambridge Audio 640 v2 amp/CD player with Monitor Audio RS2 speakers, so no doubt, I'll probably cringe listening to the ipod, no matter what i use.
I never even heard of them - I imagine, they are red hot
The um2 is a dual driver baby, while the westone 3 has triple
I use my um2 with a 4G ipod. I've only had shitty Sony earphones to compare them with, so the um2 is quite an experience. Wide soundstage (but sorta in your head), good seperation, tight controlled bass, I love them for EDM. Worth every cent because I use them everyday for commuting, and it's a joy to listen to old music with them and hear new sounds.

I just got The VModa Vibes and I have to say they're not bad-a little bit of a disappointment initially as the "strong bass" overwhelmed the high's but then I set the 8gig video nano I got to treble enhance and things is cool now....
one of the reasons i hear apple has been upping the amount of space on their ipod classic models for audiophile reasons, that way you can put more wav files on your hard drive, and listen to better quality music.
i've got some links on this thread to help you in your quest to hear music in the best way possible.
