Re: the more you know
sick work on not knowing your elements Pickle.
NASCAR was invented by and because of bootleggers. The first race was against notorious moonshine runners. Because of prohibition, alcohol was made in the woods, and delivered at night in fast cars with no lights under the light of the moon (hence moonshine) outrunning the law in the process. Several runners made names for themselves through out counties, and eventually the first race was held between them. The race was so popular, it became a sport. Ta DA!! NASCAR.Comment

Re: the more you know
absolute zero is -273.15 degrees centigrade (or 0 K).
in 2005, researchers at CERN in Finland cooled helium to 100 piko kelvin (or one tenth of one billionth of a degree above absolute zero). It is not possible to actually cool something all the way to absolute zero, as it would require an infinite time horizon and an infinitely large machine.
when liquids are cooled to very close to absolute zero, one of the strange properties they exhibit is called superfluidity. among other things, superfluids will only rotate at certain speeds....so if you put a superfluid into a container and start to spin the container, the superfluid will stay stationary until a critical speed is reached, at which point the superfluid will start to spin. thus the superfluid is quantized in terms of rotational velocity. <-think about that!
another strange property of some superfluids (Bose-Einstein condensates) is that they can slow light down to unimaginably slow speeds relative to the speed of light. in an experiment, they passed a beam of light through a B-E condensate and slowed it from its usual speed of 299,792,458 meters per second down to a crawling 17 meters per second (the speed of a road bicycle).
yes i'm a big nerd...but i love reading about shit like this.Comment

Re: the more you know
Take a sheet of paper of the ordinary variety - letter size for the Americans, A4 for the rest of the world - and fold it into half. Fold it a second time, and a third time. It's about as thick as your finger nail. Continue folding if you can. At 7 folds it is as thick as a notebook. If you would have been able to fold it 10 times, it would be as thick as the width of your hand. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to do so more than about 12 times. Try it for yourself.
At seventeen folds it would be taller than your average house.
Three more folds and that sheet of paper is a quarter way up the Sears tower.
Ten more folds and it has crossed the outer limits of the atmosphere.
Another twenty and it has reached the sun from the earth.
At sixty folds it has the diameter of the solar system.
At 100 folds it has the radius of the universe.Comment
